I understand new cars have so much safety stuff etc (and a lot of pointless tat that id do without myself) in them that they need to be larger, but so many seem to be ridiculously oversize in comparison to the interior Look at those huge bloated Audi 4 wheel drives for exampl, interior is tiny, not any bigger than an A4 inside but they take up more road space than an A8 and both BMW and Mercedes latest offerings just look fat, 6 series in particular... lh3.ggpht.com/_FoXyvaPSnVk/TFzkwYg4tGI/AAAAAAADLUs/lOed2EkRxp4/s1600/BMW-6-Series-19.JPG

I managed to find one that hasn't changed much. Ladies and Gentlemen, the Holden Statesman/Caprice: In retro WB form from the 1980s: 5157mm long, 1899mm wide, 1390mm high, with a 2895mm wheelbase. In modern, WN form from today: 5160mm long, 1899mm wide, 1480mm high, 3009mm wheelbase. So only 3mm longer today, same width (may be some with/without mirror nonsense there, not sure) a bit higher and a slightly longer wheelbase. Overall not a lot in it though.

And for similar reasons, the VE/VF Commodore is also about the same size as the HQ-HZ Holden of the 1970s, modern utes are the same size as the HQ-HZ, etc. The modern ones do have a shorter bonnet and more interior space though.

Manufacturers always boast in their advertising that the new "Eurobox mk23" is X amount bigger than the old one. So this means that as the cars always get bigger, their small car range isn't small, so they have to invent new small cars to fill the gap left by the old small car getting bigger. Make sense? Certainly doesn't to me.
And as for designing cars to protect pedestrians...........well, that's almost as daft as designing aeroplanes to protect ducks!

And as for designing cars to protect pedestrians...........well, that's almost as daft as designing aeroplanes to protect ducks! Now that is just a silly thing to say isn't it, it's trying to account for situations where even the best driver in the world can do nothing. Personally I think being hit by something like this: Is a lot better for you than being hit by something like this: Obviously the Chevy is by far the cooler car, but you could get a nasty cut just walking to close to that thing! After a few years when designers learn to work in the pedestrian regs. into their designs I'm sure they will look better, but they do for now have a kind of gaping mouth look about them.

Speaking of Polos, you should see my 1985 model in my works car park. I shall put a pic up next time its in a car park, probably when I go shopping this evening - just parking between Civics ans Corsas makes it look like a kiddies go-kart.

Guys, you all missed the best example. Look in 40 years how much the Fiat 500L has grown!

I was musing tonight, as I drove home in my tiny Rover 100, how strange it is to see a new Clio that is bigger than the Megane..... and an old Clio dwarfed by both!

Trying to find the picture I have of a pair of Minis parked next to each other.... P.

Our receptionist has owned a 2006 golf 1 for a number of years and fits in her garage beautifully. She decided to buy the latest golf (you know the one that looks like an obese American) took it home and carefully pulled into the garage and voila she can't open her door to get out the car. The new car now lives outside under a car port whilst her husband's 1987 opel kadett now takes pride of place in the garage lol.

Golf Mk3 and new Polo. When I had a MK3, 10 years ago, it seemed like quite a big car. Certainly in comparison to a MK2.
