I was talking to a transporter driver the other day and he said the latest Astra takes up more space than the first vectra, .so I think they all make them bigger these days. Hadn't previously thought about that, but it won't be long before transport companies will have to commission wider trailers to take the newer cars. They are getting ridiculously wide. I've no pictures but my Cadillac, this huge monstrosity at 21ft long with a V8 under the bonnet - is a foot longer and the same width and 6 inches lower than the 2 litre diesel Insignia one of my friends had. Which is a "perfectly normal" family saloon car...

Stolen from a similar thread on scimitarweb - this is the later (bigger) SE6a model and that's not the biggest bloated model of MINI!!

Had a Google about the size of mk4 zephyr/zodiac and found this, www.car4play.com/forum/post/index.htm?t=2563Seems even the behemoth mk4 of my youth is smaller than a modern mondeo. To me an example of how cars have gotten bigger, is how every few years manufacturers have to launch a new small car, ford had the escort, then the fiesta now the ka is the small one, but how long till a new baby is needed? BMW F20 1 Series Hatch = 4324mm length BMW E30 3 Series Saloon = 4325mm length Is the E90 3 not bigger than the E28 5? Edit:- Not quite. The 2007 on 3 series coupe is exactly the same length as the E28 5 series.

Biggest problem with moderns at the moment is that parking spaces havent got bigger yet, so getting in and out of a 3dr mk5 Golf is a mare (I have to let my dad in/out before I park)
I dread to think what it would be like trying to get in/out a new 7 series.

At over 5m long my xj6 sovereign lwb is still a formidable slab of 80s tin. However lowered 8" she's about a foot and a half lower at the roof line than most modern motors and I still find myself losing her in tescos. Next up for me would be a Maybach 62. Now that's a BIG modern

The 2007 on 3 series coupe is exactly the same length as the E28 5 series. I've had both:- E28 E90 I think the E28 looks more svelte - less bloated. Wierdly it was easier to park too.

A photo of my Mini 35 and my BMW Mini. When I brought my BMW Mini I was chatting to the sales woman and she said the Mini is the same size as a Ford Focus (Mk1 at the time I think) but the Mini has hardly any boot space or rear leg room. Dunno how they managed that!

It's not quite was the OP was getting at, but as I came home today, two of mine were side by side & it made me think of this thread, kind of two extremes I guess

OK so it's a Ford n Vauxhall but both are the "Small hatchback" of their respective times! It was a subject that came up on another forum I use where some guy was claiming cars are getting lighter. But the fact is the materials maybe getting lighter, but the cars are not. 1990 Ford Sierra is the same weight as the current Ford Fiesta, give or take a few KG's for specs.

Having owned 2 205's & Borrowed my sister-in-laws 208, I'm not sure where all the extra space is in the 208. My 205 would fit 5 people & baggage much better than the 208 does.

There are some awesome pics on here, goes to show "progress"!!
The counter argument is crash protection; I know that if some idiot in their super safe Range Rover sport were to be paying too much attention to their twitter and drove into me, I'd prefer to be in a 208 instead of a 205 - most of that extra bulk is airbags, side impact bars, pedestrian protection etc etc.
However, for the entire rest of the time, I'd rather be scooting round in 800kg of French haricot can laughing at moderns broken down with electrical problems.
Man I sound old...

Not an ideal comparison as they are not even remotely similar types of car but my E90 takes up much more road space than my Masterace. E90- 4520mm x 1817mm x 1421mm Masterace - 4435mm x 1685mm x 1960mm The difference in interior space is incredible!
