I do like the digital dash on that Senator(?) its a car I do remember seeing while growing up but as you say they are seriously rare now which is a bit of a shame really Heres my Senator 24v, its a digi dash model too. Picked it up for under £400. They get my vote, great cars, LSD as standard on most, and seriously quick in 24v form. The police loved them for a reason! The only down side is the shocking price of parts for the 24v engine. A mint one just went on ebay, I don't think it made a grand but I didnt see what it finished at to be sure. They come up from time to time, and a Carlton is basically the same car with a smaller engine. Mines getting a manual gearbox conversion, a bit of paint and maybe a V6 when the head gasket finally cries no more.

I saw that 166 the other day and it led me straight on to looking for some on ebay Its a very nice example of a car that can be a bit awkward looking standard

X 300 s and Xj40s aren't proper Jaaaags though. Series 3 can be had for peanuts and are lovely. This is mine. 13 mpg is what she does but that pininfarina styling makes up for it. 4.2 straight 6. Seriously thirsty and prone to serious rust issues now, I love them! However, values I think have started to rise quite a bit. my mate had a xj40 2.9 manual and that did 13mpg town.He now has a xk8 4.2 , 25 mpg on a run , but...... 8mpg sitting in heavy traffic I do like the digital dash on that Senator(?) its a car I do remember seeing while growing up but as you say they are seriously rare now which is a bit of a shame really Heres my Senator 24v, its a digi dash model too. Ha! I love the photo of the XJ40 at Santa Pod! I have long liked the front of the Senator, they remind me of the Ferrari Pinin! The W220 S Class like that Y reg one are very impressive cars in so many ways. They raised the game in terms of ride and refinement and still feel modern now. With a 5 litre V8 they are really quite fast. My brother had a W220 S500 about ten years ago. It was a complete dog of a car sadly, which turned out to be catastrophically unreliable with truly appalling build quality. Having the car constantly fixed under warranty was frustrating, particularly as the car actually stranded him - but once out of warranty, so many things went wrong it was almost as if various parts of the car were queuing up to fail. Some of the bills the car produced were breathtaking. Thousands of pounds. I can't exaggerate how dreadful it was. Problems were not just limited to the A/C, suspension, electrical systems, electric seats and fragile trim, suspension failure and myriad problems with the brakes. It went badly rusty too - so much so it had holes in it at only a few years old. The car he had before it was a W140 S Class. That was a much better quality car. It is sad, because I think the W220 is a pretty car. This. W220s are absolutely ghastly, unreliable, badly built and just generally rubbish. My friend has a W220 S500, we swapped over the other week for a journey with my W140 S320, and both agreed that the 140 is a far better car that the 220 will over be. The build quality is unfathomably superior (hand built vs. machine), everything just feels better and more solid. The 5spd boxes on the 220s are chocolate, and they'er not cheap to fix! I would steer clear of an S280. They're cheap, and that one on eBay does look to be a good one, but they just can't cope with the weight. Transmission suffers on them, and they just feel underpowered. My 320 is pretty slow off the mark, but is surprisingly brisk once it's going.

I would, however, suggest a W126. Okay, so not the same levels of kit as a W140, but just as well built, if not better in fact. Indestructible mechanicals (unless you ignore a leaking gearbox cooler line like I did) a ride to die for. Plus, if you buy a 300 I can promise you it'll be one of the smoothest straight six engines you'll ever enjoy. And they're quite handsome, too. Chris

Vel Satis? 3.5v6 all the way, dirt cheap. Super comfortable.

I love the C6. Nice light blue with cream leather - lovely. Too many in black or silver which doesn't suit it IMHO.

Spot on with the C6 and the Phaeton. I'd love either. The Avantime is a fine thing, but I'd not consider it a barge.
In addition to my Vel Satis recco, I'd also vote for an XM. I've had both, fabulous old things.

I had an XJ40 for about 2 years, a 3.2 auto. For mixed driving without too much traffic I averaged 19mpg, on long runs with a caravan it was 16mpg. Mine melted a piston so I had to change the engine, unbelievably it was caused by a dry joint in a fuse box causing voltage drop to the fuel pump. Generally I like them a lot and would recommend them.
Now I'm driving an S Type, 3.0 manual. They are seriously cheap now. With reasonably careful driving I'm getting 28mpg average over the last 7k miles. They are not well built cars though, lots of worn out bits considering the mileage, and quite modern so a bit boring.
I'm another fan of the big Vauxhalls, Senators are out there and are great cars, rust is the only real worry, if a 24v engine fails then yes, it can be costly, or pointless repairing but they are very reliable so not something to worry about. I have 2 Carlton GSi 24valves, same engine as the Senator, brilliant cars, great performance and drive. In a GSi I get 27mpg without taking any care at all and roasting the tyres regularly. well into the 30s on a run.
