hello can you buy the rubber boot that fits over the track rod end (I had to use the ball joint splitter on one side) or shall I just replace end but then I have to have car tracked thanks.  |

in the interest of your and any passengers safety, every-time you separate the steering control from the front hub, have the tracking checked,, PLEASE it costs relatively little.
a car not properly tracked will ( in time ) cost you tyres,bearings,discs ect, a lot more expensive than a track rod end.

you can get just the boots on ebay. when I've replaced them in the past I found the retaining clips impossible to fit, so used 2.5mm cable ties instead.

If you count the turns to undo it then the tracking won't be far out, certainly not enough to be dangerous. You can get it checked later, but in my experience most of the times I've had mine checked they say it is out, but then they make it worse. I do it myself these days.

Thanks for replys I just had a look on ebay and ordered two £3.50 delivered when I get the gearbox back in I will have tracking checked cheers.

If you're only changing the boot and not the joint, then there's no need to do the tracking. The taper will ensure that it goes back exactly where it came from.

Counting the number of turns to remove a track rod end isn't a bad idea.
But some track rod ends are a different length compared with the one which came off. So bear that in mind if going with this method.
