I like the way you justify buying cars And the enthusiasm in this thread shines through, it's awesome. Looking forward to seeing it fixed up and taken for a drive Any plans beyond fixing it and driving it?

Yes: ditching the stripe and all the superfluous Maserati badges! I might give it a polish since the workshop where it's stored is indeed a bodyshop In all honesty, perhaps I got so interested in those Biturbos because I was lost with the work I'd started on the Alfa... but I've made progress with that one and the Maserati really doesn't need much in the short term. I'm almost restoring the Alfa, taking the time to strip repaint and overhaul everything I see that's not in a good state, while I'll simply do some mechanical work on the 222. With the first I don't really know how far I'll be going until I'm done, with the other it should be well-defined tasks, albeit multiple : cambelt, clutch cylinder, freeing off brakes, replacing brake & fuel lines, cleaning the connections for the rear light clusters. Here are the inspection pics: I had somehow forgotten to upload this one, this bit should be quite tough to sort out...

That is lovely. Big fan of 80s/90s Maserati interiors.

Yes.SO glad you did this, really hope you can keep the mojo flowing with both cars and you'll end up with a really special fleet. As you can probably tell I'm a little jealous

It would be wise to wait a little before being jealous As for car mojo, it's currently higher than ever! In 3 years' time and 90% of my disposable income (and then some) I've gone from driving my parents' Twingo, to having a Maserati. The difference between the two verbs is the key in that sentence but still

Is it normal I'm completely nuts about this car? Yes, i believe so Once in 2005 a Biturbo ran out of fuel outside my house. Instinctively i went out to help him. i've loved them ever since

Now is not that bad a time to buy one I think. Many parts are being remanufactured, there is a huuuuge lot of other people's experience with them, it's fairly easy to decide which model to choose, and they're still cheap. I think that combination of factors will eventually rule out the latter, as well as the fact that by now virtually ALL 80's cars have rust & electrical issues, making the Biturbo not necessarily that bad in comparison. Lowering the standards so you don't look that bad anymore: the 'ambitious but rubbish' founding motto

Epic stuff, well done! Oh, and I found a bit of advise from another Biturbo owner.

Nice buy. I always liked these and I think the lines have aged very well. Never seen one without leather here in the U.S. I like your seats much better as the leather is usually dried out and the chairs look like massive recliners. I was always a little afraid of the up keep price. There were several modified ones running around Southern California that made massive horsepower.

The massive horsepower route I'm trying not to take, although the words 'dumpvalve' and 'wastegate' might have been uttered several times. I'm afraid these didn't fare well at all in the US, except perhaps the Biturbo SI version and the US-special with Spearco chargecooler : Ettore> that lowering stick looks a lot like a gun, how exactly should I use it? It would be quite a challenge to lower the car because it is already very low underneath, despite looking a bit high on pictures. I don't know if they performed a reverser channelling or something but the floorpans are perhaps 4 inches from the ground, the exhaust being a tad lower but not by much. From what I've heard it's not really a B-road blaster, the shell isn't stiff and the suspension is wallowy, so airride could be a good solution because handling wouldn't be compromised. Perhaps a very slight lowering with shorter springs could look cool enough while retaining useability! In any case, modifying is still a long way off when I'm about to perform my first ever cambelt swap, on a very expensive engine, on a car that's not quite road-legal yet, and which could decide to catch fire on a whim. Haha no wonder I'lm having trouble sleeping!

Beautiful car - congratulations!
May I be contrary and put in a vote for the stripes to stay? I love 'em!
Cheers

Haha thanks but they're lifting off already and quite faded I'm working on the registration papers today, and it appears that the Italian owner and Italian seller of the car aren't the same person. This could be a real issue with the préfecture since they might refuse handing out the French registration papers. They have already issued a one-month-valid paper back in 2009 so the then-buyer (now the seller) could go and have an MOT to complete the reg file, and they had already seen all those things... I'm hoping they won't say no, otherwise I don't have a clue how to sort things out.

Cam belt swap is no big deal. Mark everything and after the swap pull the plugs and turn it over many times by hand, if it turns and the marks line up you can sleep well. Good luck with the registration. For me the paper work is often more frustrating than anything the car can throw at me.

Cheers! I was quite surprised that the guys on the Maserati forum were saying the same thing "just mark it, take it out put the new one in job done". It makes a nice change from the usual "take it to a special Maserati mechanic who's also a dark sorcerer and who is the only one this side of the galaxy to understand how cambelts work" Jobs jobbed: - Italian stripes OFF - took all the boot carpeting out, found plenty of water standing there underneath everything, dried it out (luckily no real rust for the moment) - cleaned the contacts in the rear light clusters, everything works again - started changing the clutch s/c at 3pm, finished at 7pm or sth like that (a nightmare) - tried to bleed the clutch on my own, but no cigar That really doesn't make much progress does it :/

I think if the black skirts weren't so black they'd stand out more and it would appear a bit lower. Looks pretty good underneath. Trying to work out that extra loop on one leg of the exhaust though... High and low notes at the same time? Lucky that front corner didn't scrape something a bit harder, I imagine getting new headlight surrounds, or most anything for this would be a little costly.
