Growing up, I never thought my dad's cars were cool. He had the knack of walking onto a dealer's lot and picking out the runt of the litter (no offence dad!) But I now realise with a bit of tweaking and a smidgen of artistic licence, some of those old family haulers could be made cooler. (these aren't necessarily in the order we owned them) 1. Morris Traveller. There's one in every family isn't there? I was too young to remember this at the time, as I was only little. I've designed this one as a pro/street hot rod, so that's a tube chassis and roll cage, narrowed rear axle and big block V8. Wheels are Centrelines, skinnys on the front and the widest available on the rear, with Micky Ts to match. 2. Fiat Fiorino van. It's the least sporty vehicle ever made in Italy but it is a red 2 seater so I've taken inspiration from some of Fiat's more prestige cousins. The lowering and alloys is fairly obvious but I've also shaved and smoothed it a bit too. The little 1 litre engine obviously won't cut it with the image so I imagine something a bit more exotic mounted in the rear, Alfa V6 possibly? I fancied getting hold of this when I first started driving lessons. I think I had plans for a splatter type paint job in a bit of a Jackson Pollack/ Stone Roses Style. It was the early 90s and graphics were dead trendy on VWs and stuff. Luckily (for him!) Dad got rid of the van before I passed my test. What's Next? Sorry no spoilers, you'll just have to wait for part 2.

I haven't seen those before, but at least it proves my basic idea works. The back bit looks a bit too high without the roof rack over he cab though.

Episode 2 (you've been waiting with baited breath haven't you?) Lada Riva. Amazingly Mum and Dad owned 3 of these over the years; one medical appliance beige, and two in washing machine white (I'm sure those are the proper names on the colour chart). I eventually learned to drive in one of them.* I've designed this one as a lowrider. Why not? It's got coil springs all round and a boot big enough for all the batteries and pumps so it's do-able. I've seen a few real ones so I'm not the only oddball with the same idea. This one's inspired by the traditional 60s rides hence the bellflower exhaust tips, white band tyres and panel paint scheme. I swapped the massive ugly stock tail lights for slightly more subtle ones from an earlier model Lada too. The older model with chrome bumpers and circular headlights would be more suitable for this sort of customizing but it's the late model(s) that we had so that's what I've drawn here. *took the actual test in a proper driving school car.

Part 4. 1975 Toyota Corolla Estate. One for the J-car fans. We actually had two Japanese estates; this and a Datsun of a similar age. Unfortunately I can't remember what model Datsun it was. Could have been a Sunny, could have been a Bluebird, might even have been a Cherry. Dad can't remember either, only that it was white and very rusty. The upshot of all this rambling is I've drawn the Toyota here. I think the inspiration should be fairly obvious to all of you regular RR users. The original family bus was a horrid shade of brown but I couldn't bring myself to copy that.

Part 4 Peugeot 304 Estate, Talbot Alpine- AKA the cars that time forgot I've put these two together for several reasons. One, They're from the same “family”. One, they're both from the same automotive “family”. Two, they were both comically unreliable as I remember it. Thirdly, they're both cars that have been lost in the mists of history. Doing my research for this I could hardly find any photos of these cars and only two UK registered estates anywhere online. All this needs in my mind is a good whack with the lowering stick and nothing else. All the rest of the car is stock, right down to the three bolt wheels and skinny French radials. The Talbot was a little more difficult for inspiration. There's no history of modifying these or any sporting heritage that I know of. Then I thought “it looks a bit like a Rover SD1” and remembered this old Street machine feature car :- and combined it with some inspiration from this retrorides.proboards.com/thread/166179/alfa-romeo-164-procar#.U3N0XvldWiATo produce this:- and so two vehicular no-hopers are saved. As a wise person once said everything has potential. Hope you like 'em. Jez R p.s. one more episode to go, not saying what it is yet.

Well that's one. Wonder if it's got an insatiable appetite for head gaskets like I remember ours did?

Wonder if it's got an insatiable appetite for head gaskets like I remember ours did? No, it doesn't. Mechanically it's been almost faultless... Although it has to be said that the Tim worm enjoy its flavour! p.s. one more episode to go, not saying what it is yet. waiting eagerly for the final instalment.

Found this just now! Interesting! But sans Episode Three... You've reminded me, I never finished the story. There's a couple more cars to complete it, I'll have to get my thinking cap on.
