Hi chaps long time lurker minimal poster here. i had a car (wreck in need of lots of work) in storage at no cost for a long while (6years!) at a great garage, at one time they were going to rebuild it for me but life got in the way. Any way to cut a long story short i rang them to discuss my options (i was gonna ask them to scrap it and maybe salvage some small bits) turns outs they had a break in a while ago and had a lot of stuff nicked (B@st@#d scrap metal thiefs) including a couple of shells and my car. I'm not worried about my car going as id decided it was scrap anyway and consider myself lucky to have had free storage for so long. my question is how do i inform the DVLA? i assuming it was weighed in with all the other stuff nicked it no longer exists but i cant fill out the V5C with where it went etc.
Thanks in advance for your advice
Si

If it were me, I'd call them and inform them that it was broken and the shell cut up, then scrapped in pieces. Job done.
Alternatively....... You sold it, sent off the V5 to them, but haven't received your confirmation yet, and are chasing it up. And no, you can't recall the new keepers details as it was all on the V5 you sent them.....
Of course, I don't condone either of the above, but it would be simple to do to get rid of any responsibility.........

Am I missing something?
What's the problem with simply writing to them saying the car was stolen and probably weighed in?

I would guess that until it can be proven that it has been scrapped, he is still the registered keeper, and therefor liable for anything that vehicle ID gets up to?

groovy thanks you have hit the nail on the head of my worries. one case id hate to happen someone unwittingly bought from the thief (if it wasn't actually cubed) and are currently restoring it. then try to get it on the road. i believe it probably was cubed along with a load of other stuff just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas as to the best way to tell the dvla. i will send them a letter & V5C keeping copies of everything and tell them it no longer exists. i might even try to get the crime number from the garage to back it up.

I'm assuming there's a police reference number associated with the theft and that they gave the reg number of your car so there should be a note on the system saying it has been stolen and you are no longer responsible - this kind of touches on one of my threads from a couple of months ago, you want to stay as the registered owner in case it turns up fully restored etc...

They only register the keeper, not the owner, and he certainly isn't the keeper. Fair enough while he was the keeper but had it at a garage for repair or whatever but now it isn't.
Just tell the truth, a crime number may be a good idea but I wouldn't worry, just tell the truth, you haven't done anything wrong until you decide to not tell them the truth and pretend you did something else.
Don't worry about it re-appearing, if it does I'm guessing the DVLA wont just send them a V5C for a car registered as stolen. Make sure its reported to the police too. The police will surely be alerted and you night get it back.
On the other hand, if it does re-appear and you wrote to then telling them you scrapped it you could be in bother.

No. He remains the registered owner until doovla are notified otherwise. Simple as! I know what you're saying, and I agree that is the way it should be. However...... If your car was stolen, you are still the registered keeper in the eyes of the DVLA. When the insurance pays out to you, it becomes their property, and therefore the DVLA will have it registered to the insurance company. Then if it recovered, it is theirs. There is no section on the V5 to declare a car as stolen and no longer your responsibility iirc? if you tell the DVLA that it *might* have been crushed, they can't prove either way what has happened, and knowing what they can be like, they are unlikely to want to have that vehicle untraceable (they do like to be able to blame someone for stuff). That aside, forgetting the fact that the car was a bit of a wreck, surely the garage is insured against theft? Therefore you could at least claim the scrap value of the car back from them?? After all, your car was stolen from their premises! maybe this would be worth a thread on pepipoo? cheers, lee

I'm not bothered about cash like I said I had free storage for a long while and was gonna scrap it anyway. Think I'll send a letter with crime number and v5c and tell them I believe it to be scrapped and I am no longer the registered keeper. Keeping copies of everything. Thanks

I recently sold my pick up truck to a trader, I sent off the slip but it looks like it didn't make it to DVLA. A month later I have £300 worth of parking fines on the door mat! I phoned dvla and they said I just have to write a letter, stating the car and my details
The address is... SC DVLA Swansea SA99 1ZZ
