Hi I know there is a retro bike site but it doesn't seem to get much activity,I was wondering if anyone who knows about ignition systems maybe able to help me away from here by email, text to help me with getting a spark on my nvt easyrider 50cc moped?its had a new condenser and points but still no spark, when I test with a multimeter across the points I continuity with them closed but when I open them I still get continuity which I am sure isn't right? I would be most gratefull if anyone can help and also sorry for posting here but I really need someone's knowledge to assist me and I know this is the place for clever people. Many thanks Paul

Most points sets have a plastic insulator to ensure that the business end of the points is isolated from the main body of them. (Not said that very well but I hope it makes sense.) Make sure that's in place.

Have you checked for continuity with the points out (no fitted to the back plate) - theres no way its going to spark as it is. It could well be a bad set of points, it happens more than you would like to think about. If it runs a Yamaha engine like the other NVT i can think of I would order a set of genuine points from a yamaha dealer if they aren't obselete.
Have you got the insulators on the spring in the right place as well?

Have you flicked the points open & closed and checked for a spark at the ht lead?

Thanks for all your replys,I bought a new condenser and I spoke to the company who sold them to me and he said it's right for that to happen and you can only test points for an open and closed circuit when not connected to condenser? I don't know much about points and condensers but he seems to know his business. It is a peddle start moped so maybe it does something different?

I have now determined that I am getting a spark by the way of taking the plug cap off the HT and touching the end and getting a poke!also it sparks if I arc it to the head. The problem now is I get no spark if I put a plug on it and touch it on the head? Tried three different plugs and two caps?

Can you swap the top coil with a known good one? Its wierd you are getting a good spark from the HT lead when holding it near the head but nothing when connected to the plug - what gap is it set at?
