Righto, I've been doing very little car-related over the last year...various reasons, not least down to taking on extra responsibilities at work, and other interests took a front seat. Now, those that know me will know that I do get a fair amount of downtime at work, and use of their storage facilities - so I think it's about time to set the ball rolling on... retrorides.proboards.com/thread/156697/breadvan-banger-rally-veteran-essex?.U6s9aLGSDnY=undefined#.U7B_gbGSDnYKindly donated by the OP to my work for a 'project', my last lot of budding mechanics have now left so I've to start again with a whole new raft of keen, but largely incompetent, spanner monkeys. I don't even have any up to date pics at the moment, so I'm creating this thread to force me into actually doing something. Here's what I know... It runs. It doesn't idle. Whether this is due to it desperately needing a service and tune, or the air leaks from the rotten exhaust, I'm not sure at the moment. But it does start, stop and go if you put enough volts through the (largely dead) battery. It has a 1/4 tank of (stale) petrol in it, still worth more than the car. It's a breadvan! I've always had a soft spot for breadvans, I don't really know why...anyway, the plan... Get it running, idling (probably a full engine service), and into a garage for MOT to see how bad any rot is. I can't weld :-( Full brake service - a set of front discs are less than a tenner from ECP, so it would be stupid not to. If a coil were to magically 'fall off' each spring, then that wouldn't go amiss. Replace broken bits - I'm pretty sure I ordered a rear light last year, exhausts aren't too pricey. I've also got a set of lattice-style wheels off a Renault (I think) that I bought last year - should look quite nice. And, the best bit that came to me when I couldn't sleep the other night - harlequin paintjob. You know, harlequins...have some pics shamelessly stolen from elsewhere. retrorides.proboards.com/thread/149841/harlequin-pics Now, given that the bready is a 3 door I have a decision to make regarding either artificially creating a line, or carrying the sill colour all over the rear quarter. Not thought that far ahead yet. I'm armed with my dad's mouse sander and about £100 in accumulated Halfords vouchers (I'm doing this on the cheap)...so here we go...

Quick update - work began yesterday... Destickering - there's a car under there somewhere, I know there is... Roof rack disguising a little bit of dirt... This breather hose looks important - and totally disintegrated in fear when I got near it. Can't be helping the non-idle and rough running...bet there's a few more hoses to find yet too... So let's just see what's causing this old leak around the headAHBUGGER. Sheared rocker cover bolt (of which there are only 3). It was like that when I got there. A little chiselling, drilling, knocking with a hammer, chisel some more and HEY PRESTO. Now to find a suitable M6 bolt to replace...and a new rocker cover gasket This MAY be an MOT fail - thankfully already have a replacement ready to go in. Spot the difference? Already got a few more bits...the plan is to get it running as best as possible then stick it in for MOT and see the extent of the work needing doing. I know the brakes will need replacing, and the exhaust, but it's such a simple little thing that (touch my wood) there's not tooooooo much else that can go wrong? Barring catastrophic rot issues, this could be a goer sooner rather than later...

OH HELL YEAH! I knew you'd get stuck into that Polo sooner, rather than later, buddy. Nice to see you make a start. If you need me for anything, give me a shout (It's bound to be the other way round, but there we go!) Good luck - and may the "Dub" be with you
Oh, and on the breather pipe problems, my Golf was idling very poorly, until I cleaned out the pipe on top of the rocker cover, cleaned the air box out, and taped up the warm air feed for the carb.
EDIT: I know it's from a game, but it might help a little bit........

Now I want to buy Forza 4 instead...
Just made a big order with ECP (next day delivery YO!) - surprisingly they have an 'up to 50% off' sale at the moment - so although the plan was to do the absolute basics and stick it thru an MOT I've ordered a whole bunch of service parts and new front discs, pads and rear shoes. The rear drums are rusty as hell but there's no point replacing them when a good session with a wire brush and some hammerite will see them good again.
Hoping to get the order delivered tomorrow morning, and set off to the garage in the afternoon. Need to stop into Halfrauds for some hose to replace that breather pipe...

There's no time for Forza, matey. Not when you've got a breadvan to take care of! I hope your mini service goes well

Sweet. Thanks, matey. I'm borrowing a jack tomorrow and nipping over to the car in the afternoon. Had a bit of a spending spree earlier, so I'll be tarting up the drums (just like you're doing) maybe stripping down the rear brakes and I'll give you the prognosis on how bad they all are tomorrow night! On the colour side of your Polo, from what I can figure out, your motor was green, so your car will have been painted with the "Green Base" outline (see picture) if it had been a harlequin. So, as it's three door, you could even delete the rear door colour, or the rear panel one........

So I waited in all day Thursday for a 'next day' ECP delivery...these came on Friday. Brake pads/discs for the front, new shoes for the back, rocker cover gasket, plugs/leads/dizzy cap/rotor arm/oil & filter etc. etc. Oh YOU BET I'm getting my £3.95 P&P back. However, none of these new bits are ready for fitting yet - spent a couple of hours with my £1 shop scraper removing the last of the sticker and some of the writing that had been put on with tippex. Apart from the writing on the bumpers - would white spirit/thinners remove that? Can't scrape it off because the plastics are all textured. Oily bits...check...still oily. Best I can do with the stickers. Note hilarious oversized wheels that I'm going to try and make fit. They were destined for another project, but didn't fit, so I needed to donate the original wheels blah blah blah. Why do people ALWAYS miss that strip under the grille when painting? My sentiments exactly... Now, the eagle-eyed among you will have noticed that the stickers haven't gone from the tailgate - the keys don't lock the boot, so instead of buying a fresh lock the previous owners have been more 'basic' in their approach. Not the approach I would have taken but, hey, if it keeps your army rations and spare bulbs safe then that's what counts. Truth be told the tailgate's totally rotten and it's not worth the effort to try and save it as is...gonna see if I can source one online or from a local breaker. Colour not an issue. Lock set is about £15 online. Wheels came off without too much graft...just surface rust guvnor... Had to stop at that point because I was off selling the Corrado - but the plan is to bolt the engine bits back together, proper service, replace any perishes hose(s) that may have caused the rough running, juice up the battery and drag her in for an MOT...hopefully at some point this week. Then go from there...

make sure you check/replace that engine breather on the back on the block, just swapped the missus' engine cos that was fubar'd and blew the HG, twas cheaper to swap the engine than buy the HG kit

Sorry to " gate crash" the thread, but where's the engine breather on the back of the block actually located? (I think I'm running the same engine as Paul - 1300 cc) Thanks

It's got a big tear in it and was on my list to be replaced when I can find the other end lol! Slow day today down to usual ECP incompetence (the leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm were ALL wrong - 3 for 3!) and seized brake disc retaining bolts slowed my progress. Going to a 'proper' motor factors tomorrow to get the right bits.

sounds right, its connected to the rocker cover, also goes somewhere else and right down the back onto a big circular thing pressed into the block

I'll have another look tomorrow...the only hose I've got directly connected to the rocker cover goes up towards a T piece above a very expensive and rusty looking Eberspacher preheater that a previous owner had installed. It crumbled into piece when I touched it lol!
There's another big hose coming out of the block that's also holed to hell...
