As a follow on to my question about Rose Joints. I know a welded repair on steering linkages is a MOT fail, but what about fabricated turnbuckles which are screwed onto a steering rack. These are made by welding a tube onto threaded bosses and are not a repair of existing components, but a new part. Still a fail?

If it looks like frankensteins ugly uncle then it will fail ,but if it looks neat and well done then see no reason why it won't pass as long as safe and up to the job in hand

If it's welded properly they'll never tell anyway...

buy some taps and dies and do it properly. i hate those weld on threaded bungs, there really isnt any reason to use them other than not having the right equipment to do the job.

Don't see any issues, what about all the adjustable tca's compression struts etc available for escorts for example
They're all welded

yep, because its a cheap and cheerful way of sticking them together. it may never break, but it looks curse word and isnt the correct way to do it.
in engineering terms, the correct way to do it is to start with the correct size tubing, bore the ends then tap them to size. its not even like its any harder if you buy the right size tube to make them.

There's a very good reason to use them - most of the time you don't need that kind of wall thickness down the rest of the tube.

In the end it was cheaper (and easier!) to get a threaded tube made.
Probably overkill, but it's made from 3mm wall tube, on an 12.5mm hole!
Thanks for all the advice, car is now back on the road, should really update the Readers Ride thread.......
