Peugeot XD - what other engines will fit the same gearbox ?

My Mahindra has a Peugeot 2.1 XD. Do any other Peugeot diesel engines, such as XUD, have the same gearbox mounting pattern ?

Is that a variant on the 2.3 as fitted in the 504's? If so then from experiance the 1.9 and 2.3 are the same pattern and will fit the 504 box, yep a 1.9D 504 family estate thanks to not checking the engine carefully, it was a bit more frugal than the 2.3 (55 mpg on a long run) but a lot less powerful.
The 2.1D was also fitted into the Granada

I've got a spare 2.3 out of a 505 that came with the Mahindra. AFAIK it's the same as the 2.3 fitted to the 504. Later versions of Mahindra had the Peugeot 1.9 but are like hens hind teeth. The 2.1 is regarded as very underpowered so the 2.3 or 2.5 are a common swop. On the other hand the more modern 1.9 is supposed to be even better and during a full rebuild I'd like to do an engine swop to one - probably out of a LDV Pilot.

2.0 hdi is a blinding engine if you don't mind wiring up a common rail engine,.

I'd go for a 1.9 turbo out of a 306, 405, 406, Xantia, Xsara or BX. If you get an early 306 or a 405 it will have a Bosch pump which is better for tuning and veg oil. A later version such as from the 406 or Xantia will have a semi-ECU pump which will never run properly without the ECU, so to save hassle just get an earlier Bosch pump. Bigger turbo like a £50 TD04 for example, FMIC and a shimmed governor and ground LDA in the pump should see 160bhp+ quite cheaply.

I know the XUD and XU engines share the same bellhousing bolt pattern - not sure if the XD does too I'm afraid
