Hi everyone,
I am in the process of stripping everything out of my Rickman Ranger, and i have come across something that i'm unsure of. apologies, but there arent any pictures yet, as i forgot to take any, but will get some tonight hopefully.
essentially, it is a aluminium box, with a threaded section on each side for the speedo cables to connect to. one end then goes to the g'box as normal, and one to the speedo. i have taken the cables off both sides, and spun it, but it seems to be 1:1 so it isn't a reduction device like i thought it may have been.
the problem i have is that the gearbox pspeedo cable is damaged, and i cant find anything that looks like this type at all.
any ideas based on my very sketchy description?

Could it be something to do with reverse, stop the cable spinning the other way and damaging the speedo?

The only time i've seen those is as KPH to MPH convertors, the only other thing I could think of would be if there was a mismatch in direction of rotation, I can't imagine someone would go to the trouble of buying/ using one for no reason though.
You can get speedo cables made up to whatever size/ ends you need, primarily for vintage vehicles but they should be able to do just about anything.

Any ID marks? back in the day these would correct over/under reading speedos? it may only be a few % so checking by eye you wouldn't notice the differance ? any wires? similar was used as a sensor for cruise or fuel computors? though usually behind the dash ? have a look here for cables www.speedycables.com/speedo_rotary_cables.html

cheers for the replies guys i hadn't thought of the fact that it could only be correcting by a couple of %, in which case i wouldn't notice by eye. it has two bolts, so i will open it up and take a look. in any event, i will probably just replace with a suitable length single cable and sort out any inaccuracy later. as for the reversing thing, good call, but they both turn the same way, regardless of which way the input is turning.

Hi, it sounds like it is "correction" box (for the want of a better word) used in commercial vehicles for the tacho,s. An ordinary speedo fitted to a vehicle is allowed a 10% error a tacho was required to be within 3%.Back in the day on trucks and buses it was done at the gearbox end. On vehicles like Transit minibuses it was done by an inline gearbox like described. As said there will be a small percentage over or under geared. Tacho testing stations could change some of the gear train inside to correct errors and then seal up coupling nuts with wire and seals. I would think some one has used it because they had one, as a way of connecting up the speedo.

Recalibration box, I have one on my Passat as it is using a Volvo 122 speedo, they are used when the speedo is a long way out and cant be recalibrated
