Some may.be aware I'm in the process of using the all too popular mx5 engine for a project car....
But it got me wondering when i started filling out the form to apply for a new log book....
What happens to the tax class of a car when you do an engine swap? Still tax exempt? Or does it take on the tax class of the donor car because of emissions or what?
Cheers
Craig

Ditto. I'd expect DVLA will see your car, not the power unit.

Cool cheers guys! i literally had no idea!!! Could you tell? Haha while I'm on a legality theme, what's the law on seat belts? All the Hillman hunters I've seen have them, but mine doesn't, and there's nowhere where try would have been attached..... :/ nor wing mirrors actually! Lol cheers Craig

What year is the car? They are mandatory from 1965 onwards, or if fitted as standard prior to this. (out of the top of my head)

1975 requires at least front seatbelts. Mirrors wise you are required either a centre or offside mirror.

If your vehicle doesn’t have seat belts, for example it’s a classic car, you aren’t allowed to carry any children under 3 years old in it. Children over 3 are only allowed to sit in the back seats. These rules only apply if your vehicle was originally made without seat belts
that's what wa on the direct gov website but they say nothing about years.....

All Hunters had seatbelts when new so are a requirement now. There will be mounting points unless somebody had replaced sills, floor or whatever and omitted to refit the mounting points to the new panels.

August 1978 for wing mirrors if memory serves me correctly.
I had a 1969 Cortina not so long ago, which didn`t have any wing/door mirrors. I looked into it then, and I`m sure the year was 1978.
Regarding seatbelts, there are a few dates for different belts. I think it was 1965 for a lap belt in the front, and 1967 for a three point belt in the front. Pre 1965 didn`t require any, if the car didn`t come with any from new.
This is all from memory within the last year, so dates/details could be slightly out.

This should help clarify the seatbelt issues. This isn't my work, just copy and pasted from a different forum. I believe it to be pretty accurate though. In fairness, whether it passes or not may well depend on how classic "friendly" your tester is. The LAW is as per the history from RoSPA: www.rospa.com/roadsafety/info...lt_history.pdf1965 It becomes compulsory to fit seat belts in the front of cars built in Europe. 1967 New cars in the UK must be fitted with front seat belts by law. Great Britain requires 3-points in front outboard positions. 1968 Great Britain requires retrofit of 3-point belts in front of newer cars. The MOT rules are then clear: www.ukmot.com/5-1.aspPassenger and dual purpose vehicles with no more than 8 passenger seats with 4 or more wheels first used on or after 1 January 1965: A. vehicles first used before 1 April 1981: A belt which restrains the upper part of the body (but need not include a lap belt) for each seat B. Vehicles first used after 31March 1981: A 3 point (lap/diagonal) belt (see note 2) With respect to 'A' above then the belt must restrain the upper part of the body but doesn't have to include a lap belt, thus can be a 2 point belt (Shoulder to lock diagonal only).....if you go back to the RoSPA seat belt history above it does reference this type of belt:

Lol All 924's have the provision for rear seat belts. The mountings are under the rear carpet/seat for lap belts and the shoulder mounting on the C pillar. Not fitted as standard until MY86 924S/944 which had inertia rear belts fitted

Hmmm.... A lot of different info! Lol I have stamped number plates, even though the car misses out on th privilege by 2 years.... I'm hoping any policemen will let it slide But i think with the seat belts, that's too big a gap to get away with at an MOT station! The DVLA website should seriously consider stating dates!!!! Thanks or all the help though guys

All Hunters had seatbelts when new so are a requirement now... Including rear belts? Mine is a 72, it has standard 3-point belts in the front but none in the back. I suspect rear belts may have been "dealer option" or aftermarket - can anyone confirm? cheers
