Anyone have any suggestions / ideas? Looking for a retro that will accomodate two mountain bikes in the back (don't want to use a bike rack). I was looking at big Volvos and would rather find something I can stick on a classic policy.

ive had various large estates over the years, and concluded the best way to carry two bikes with them is a set of thule roof mount bike racks, cos they lock and are pretty secure.
fitting two bikes into an estate is going to involve some disassembly no matter what, which ranges from a mild annoyance with v-brakes and QR wheels, to a proper ballache with discs and bolt through axles. even then pedals, bars, levers, axles and oily chains and mechs are likely to mean some interior damage, thats before you worry about the bikes scratching each other up (if you do worry about such things that is). times that by 10 at the end of a ride when the bikes and youd are curse word wet through, muddy, and you have cold hands trying to take them apart.
i guess your reasons are probably security related, but some good locking racks would be harder to remove the bikes from than smashing a window on a car and removing the bikes would be...

As above - it would be easier to load if you went for a higher roof shape e.g. people carrier or van converted for wheelchair access so you can stow them upright rather than lying down. |
