Little update, my rear bumper arrived, the later-style one with the extra lip on which matches the front one it currently has. Good stuff, brand new and exactly what I wanted. I'll paint it black and then pop it on. I'll soon be retiring these wheels (after a good 2 and half years of use on various cars) and hopefully selling them on because.. ... I've bought a different set of wheels. I've been looking for ages and I finally decided on something, I wish I could afford the mega £££ 3-piece splits everyone loves but I can't so I've gone down a different route. Won't give too much away, but most notably they're narrower, and not steels - fancied a change, they're nice wheels so don't worry haha. I could well have put tires on the Wellers but it'd look basically the same as it does now.

Taking delivery of wheels tomorrow, exciting stuff since I've always wanted some /posh/ wheels.. In the meantime I repainted the banded steels for the millionth time, albeit in some kind of gloss black finish this time. I tracked down a replacement piece of side trim for £15 so I'll kill two birds with one stone by just doing the rear bumper when I get the trim since I need to paint them both black to match the rest anyway. The rack is on again but I'll do a trip to the scrappy at some point to get some new roof bars to make another one. Reusing the wood means it'll be <£5 which is good and I've been meaning to do it before I even got this car Edit: Bit of old vs. new..

Got home and saw this.. What's inside? .. .. .. four of these. I bought them knowing I'd need to open out the centers a little since they're VW fitment so they'll go on after that. Specs are 13 x 7 all round, tires are 165/55/13's so it'll be a lot better after having 14 x 8/9 with 195/45/14's.

(ignore the dirtiness of the car..)So thought I'd try them on today, was surprised they did actually go on even with the 3mm centerbore difference. Much nicer in contrast to banded steel And then the other one.. Now the wheels are 1 inch smaller in width and diameter I have more clearance on the rear so I should finally be able to drop it down more if the torsion bar is a bit more forgiving this time round haha. I'm liking them a lot but they obviously won't go back on it 'til they're bored out a bit

That looks so much better ! A comment like that will probably make you want to sell them It probably be more difficult but could you turn the hubs down to fit the wheels ?

That's another possibility, I think boring is going to be the easiest way to do it for *ahem* boring reasons. The rear tires of the banded steels are on their last legs, I've been having a bit of a laugh sliding it about since there's so much grip at the front but none at the rear. Sounds silly but it's really fun haha. Shame it's not rear wheel drive so it'll hold instead of straighten out but that's what the Escort is for Also it turned 97k miles today, it'll be in the hundreds soon but it is 28 years old!

Rear tires are on their absolute last legs so I gave it a good thrash (it's so fun to drive when you push it to the edge) before they come off for good, there's a certain stretch of road round here that's just perfect even in a low-powered car. Gave it a full tank of fuel (it's getting cheaper!) too and will give it a good clean if after this weekend I finish boring out the wheels at home myself since I did one tonight and I'll get on with the others over the weekend probably.

It's done! I finished boring the wheels out over the weekend and I gave it a test drive to ... test .. if it's all good and it's a lot better because: Wheels are now 2 inches narrow with 30mm narrower tires, steering feels 10x better Vibrations etc @ 70mph+ are now gone.. it no longer feels like it's going to fall apart haha. It's a lot lower! But soon to go down a bit more. I'll get some photos soon..

Haha yeah it's pretty bad, the '77 Escort gets beached every time it tries to come out, the Shuttle scrapes a lot and so does the 5, not great considering I'm planning to lower it more I can't get a jack under it anymore either so I keep some planks of wood laying around so it'll jack up if I need it to With wheels now out the way I'll start lowering it more..

Long scaffolding boards are the way forward. I know all about scraping/not fitting over stuff, its common ground now haha.

That looks so much nicer than the steels IMO. Liking it. Glad you kept the side trim, it really helps make it what it is
