Hello all.. picked up a cylinder head I took in for skimming.. so the story diesal freelander headgasket blown.stripped the head to it in to my local resurfacing place...said they would have to machine the valve seats and valves as well as the head...ok left it with them 3 days later they rung said it's ready to pick up... now started to reassemble and noticed all the ports.water jacket.valve orifice.were full of swarf..now I paid £120 for said service ..is this common practice for machine shops to leave bits in there.. or is it just lazyness..?? Anyone else expirenced this ??

Fairly common (poor) practice I'm afraid. £120 doesn't sound too bad tho.

Make sure you get it all out, I think the argument is if they clean it and miss some then its going to be their fault when it all goes wrong later, better for them if you clean it. It would have been nice of them to point it out though.

The guy I use presents them back spotless - but he's the one chap all the good local workshops use so I guess he's a cut above the rest.

Thats poor practise if they cannot spend 30 seconds blasting it with compressed air . Fairly standard to do after machining anything , it suggests a lack of care to me .

That's a bit toss to be fair, the bloke I use gives me stuff back clinically clean and is cheap as well, not really worth kicking up a fuss over, if they send a head back like that obviously they think it's acceptable so won't really see your point of view
Just don't use them again,

curse word off you lot. You pay for machining you get machining. If you have half an idea about engines its going to be cleaned before you assemble it not when it comes off the machine.
110% not normal practice to clean peoples heads for free. If they ask for it however..

So not even 30 seconds with a airline is too much to expect ? I obviously have no idea then .

Hi, I agree with slater, I wouldn't expect it to be cleaned only the excess wipe off the surface at most. I would clean it up before building it up even if they had cleaned it. Better to do it twice than not at all.

Cylinder heads comes back from my machine shop spotless and reassembled. At similar cost to the OP. So yea. I think it's just a case of who you use, innit.

Its a matter of cleanliness as well . I don't machine things and then give them to people covered in oil or swarf becuase they will get filthy and possibly cut themselves .

I wouldn't expect it for the £40 I pay to get heads skimmed, but for three times that amount you would assume they'd clean it.

My mistake. I still feel that it should have been cleaned, but as had been said, it all depends on who did it I guess

My mistake. I still feel that it should have been cleaned, but as had been said, it all depends on who did it I guess Had the head skimmed..oil residue over head surface...had the valve seats machined and the valves machined..paid £120 in total...Most of the water ways were full of large chunks of swarf.lots of tiny shavings elsewhere on the head...

Its just down to who you use. Some clean, some don't, doesn't matter what the price level is. As long as the work is good it doesn't really bother me either way.
