I have a 1970 mk3 mini hauled up in a lockup that has been off the road since '92. its showing last taxed 01 October 1992, MoT exempt and £145 a year to tax. Should be tax exempt but not MoT exempt I just asked them if there might be a problem with the system and they said no. Perhaps there is, yours isn't down as being for farm use as well is it ? If other people are getting the same thing perhaps if enough people let them know they will do something about it, otherwise everyone with a tax free car will have to mess about changing the tax class.

I'm back on the phone again to see if anyone can offer an explanation. At this rate all tax exempt cars could be the same.
They won't do anything unless individual owners ring them and ask about this, I did try to help !
All they suggest is that if you have a problem ring them up and get them to look into each case. I don't know if there is a problem, perhaps it's something caused by the rolling tax being re-introduced.
I have just checked a few more cars I know aren't on the road but should be tax exempt and they all come up as being untaxed but MOT exempt. I know they haven't been scrapped and haven't had new logbooks issued for some time. It might be an issue for all cars that are eligible for free tax but haven't been changed to the Historic vehicle tax class. In one way this is a good reminder for those who haven't done this already but means you have to wait longer for a new tax disc to be issued.

I was reading about that EU directive last night but I don't think it has been implemented as my Allegro still needs an MOT. And rightly so, bloody death trap!
I do think this new automated tax system is very open to bad data not being checked or noticed though, take the mrs recent £85 bonus for example, muppets!
The amount it must be saving the DVLA in staff wages and printing disks though they are still quids in

Ttfn Glenn As far as I know it's only pre 1960 vehicles that are MOT exempt at the moment, could be wrong if it's something they have just done though.

I'd suggest giving them a call if it wasn't so frustrating doing so.

Yeah it has as I did the tax class swap last year, I guess this MOT exemption mess up is just affecting the cars that haven't changed to historic yet?

I think its just the MOT database showing incorrect data for cars that were either exported or have not been sorned in a long time.
Just did a check on another 1974 mk1 escort - shows taxed and a current mot

I have just managed to speak to somebody at the DVLA about this. They have been changing the computer system recently and decided to change what was No MOT Details Known to MOT Exempt. I'm not sure how many cars it would involve but the ones I have checked have been off the road since before the computerised MOT syatem was put in place. I suggested it would be better to have kept the no details known as what they have done is confusing. You can check your car here www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/Default.aspx, and if it comes up as being MOT exempt could you let DVLA know using the feedback button at the top of the page. I don't know if this will affect any new logbooks that are sent out, mine is down as for farm use but it could have always been like that.

Hopefully it's just because they are sorting things out although I have had the search not work but it did shortly afterwards. Might have been a bad typing moment on my part that time.

I just checked the enquiry page on the DVLA site and my car is back to having no MOT details and the other ones I checked were the same. Looks like they have fixed it and after checking with them it won't affect any logbooks that have been sent out in the last few weeks.

I don't think there is anything on the logbook that would indicate MOT exemption in the Historic taxation class anyway? You would have to have one of the other taxation classes to normally get MOT exemption, Limited Use, Showmans, Mobile Crane, Agricultural and Works Truck off the top of my head

I was just worried that the website fault could have meant some cars were put into the wrong tax class if they had been issued new logbooks recently. I don't think that has happened though. Hopefully it's all back the way it was so if you are checking the details of a car that isn't on the MOT database it won't say MOT exempt but will just say no details know.

Whats this farm use for MOT exempt? It's for agricultural vehicles like tractors, combines and such - not the old car the farmer uses There are strict rules regarding use of agricultural vehicles on the public highway so not a way of avoiding MOT / tax to us law abiding drivers.
