Hi, i have a hyundia accent 1997 with a auto box, i lent it to my mate and he broke down in it as it kept coming out of gear, he called the breakdown company and they said it was the gearbox oil was low so topped it up with 2 litres of oil, He drove it back home ( around 50 miles) and he said it was better but not as it should be. Anyway ive had a look today and it wont select reverse and it holds 2nd gear till it nearly red line then it changes into top with such a jerk it nearly snaps your neck. I looked at the gearbox oil level and it seems way too high. Now the question is...is it completely knackered now I tough of draining all the oil out and filling up again but i cant help thinking that its pointless Any thoughs ?

How are you checking the level? On most automatics it is done with the engine running at normal temperature with the box in either park or neutral. Any idea what 'oil' your mate put in? It'll be transmission fluid of a certain spec, using the wrong one can cause shift problems.
Not selecting reverse is a bad sign but it could just be down to blocked filters and contaminated oil. You can drop the sump off most transmissions and either clean the filter if it is a metal screen or get a new filter for it - try Jpat (google it) for parts they have most things in stock.
Refill with the correct grade of ATF, you'll never manage to drain it all - you usually get about half out as loads stays in the torque convertor.
Bad changes can also be down to faulty solenoids I modern gearboxes - that could be the reason for not selecting reverse as well, they can fail with no warning and give the wierdest of symptoms.

thanks for your reply, i will look into that, I'm sure he put in the correct oil as he had to shoot off to get some. not sure that the car warrents spending much cash on it now but it really has done us proud. In the 3 years ive owned it it has covered over 80000 miles and never let us down all ive had to replace is the exhaust. the battery and oddly enough 3 door handles !!!! oh 2 sets of front pads , new discs and 1 set of rear shoes... so not bad for a 20 year old car
