I've had some bad health news (worsening heart failure) so MIGHT end up selling all my toys (other than daily Skoda & Smart) therefore less mess for family to ultimately sort out if the worse happens I'm thinking however to put the funds towards a decent car that is fun but also in perfect condition so easily sellable if necessary. Normally I tend to buy "projects" - and have quite a few lying around Anyway I fancy something around 8-12 years old that is a 4 seater or 2+2 convertible with folding hardtop. I can only think of the Peugeot 207/307CC (don't fancy) and later Volvo C70 (too modern). Whilst there are a few 2 seaters like SLK, MX5 coupe and Copen older 4 seaters are scarce with only recently manufacturers starting to make them. So other than 207/307CC can anyone think of other cars that fall within my age requirement (and say under £3500) Cheers

Sorry to hear the news The only stuff that pops to mind tends to have a soft top such as an A4 convertible. *n

Not good news. Focus CC. Odd to think how long it took me to recall it. I haven't seen one in ages. [edit : beaten to it while I was researching ] Colt CZC (tiny and tinny) BMW E93 (a bit modern perhaps)

Pity the SLK isn't a 4 seater as really fancy one. Old model Golf and Beetle are within budget in powered soft top. Neighbour had Saab convertible that is nice as well. My "taste" is actually older cars (50's, 60's, 70's & 80's) but can't cope anymore with all the work they involve keeping rust at bay and regular maintenance.

Didn't realise Focus CC and Eos would be within my budget There is also the Astra for a little more. Will still have one toy in the garage though as can't give up on messing around all together.

What he said, these Mercs are real bang for buck. What you really want is an E93 320d, my current daily. Four seats, amazing looks, hard top, plenty of go, well built and cheapish tax and 50mpg. Had ours nearly 5 years now, 80k miles and never missed a beat. Unfortunately well out of budget.

My brother has just purchased an Eos, and I was surprised how much room there is in the back. Not loads, but more than I thought.

I had a brand new Megane CC 1.9dci in 2005 for a year. Really liked it, was fairly quick, comfy and surprisingly good on fuel. However.... I had a problem with the roof/electrics freaking out when I went through a puddle at speed. It fixed its self by turning car off and back on. But I would be very wary of a 10 year old one. (Also wouldnt buy the one I owned as it had a very hard 12 months lol) Think the 6 speed gear box can have problems with 5th failing (same box as used by Vauxhall) Ignoring the hard top bit, E46 3 Series or A4 would be my choice, avoid the 320d - worst engined car I have owned, power delivery is all wrong - just get a 330i. Here it is how it looked most of the time lol (20 minutes old here)

Where's the 206?!! If any of these folding hard tops are classic-imminent it's the ultimately accessible Peugeot 206cc. The tin-tops were one of the most successful superminis ever, are still dignified as they enter their culling age, and will soon be fondly found as forever treasures. These also happen to be the model that truly brought folding roofs to the masses, the 206cc is a very popular little 2+2 and the bargain of this summer for sure. From screaming 1.6 16v engines to gutsy 2.0 HDI's and handling to match.. well, anything.. What's not to like..?!

It might be labeled as a 2+2, but you simply can't sit in the back of a 206cc, not even kids older then 3 or 4 years old. You said you don't want the Volvo C70, but I do want to mention it drives great and stands out a bit. Edit; missed the point about the hardtop being a demand. Sorry.

Basically what it comes down to is being greedy. I miss my old Capri but on the other hand also want a convertible seeing I can't ride motorbikes any more. A hardtop convertible is best of both worlds - coupe and convertible Modern cars do nothing for me but I do accept they are normally free of rust problems and give impressive economy compared to the cars I prefer ! Difting isn't an interest I like but the feel of a RWD car compared to a FWD is something desirable.

Completely o/t but that's where I get my car cleaned! Useful thread this. Hadn't considered that the EOS was down to that level now. I'd like to replace my NC MX5 with something that has back seats but, whilst I'd like a convertible again, I'm not sure I necessarily want a soft top again. Would be E93 for me if budget allowed. Drove a former boss's 335i about 4 years ago and fell in love with it instantly!

If we are going to go for the completely different. Large, comfy, 4 (+1) sports cruiser, coupe, wind in hair experience. I'd go for one of these... but then again the old man has one (has had a few)so I may be biased.
