Hullo all,
I've got an XUD9 in a 405 that is reluctant to start, both when hot and cold. I've done the obvious and changed all the filters and the previous owner has fitted new glow plugs, relay and priming bulb so I'm running out of options. The engine runs really well when started.
Thanks
James

IMO this can be down to a few things:
-Have you tried to pump the priming bulb prior to starting the car until it is rock hard? Whilst doing this have you kept an eye on the fuel filter housing? If this appears to be damp then the chances are the housing is warped and letting air in. A scrapyard one will possibly do the trick but going new will cure it.
-What brand of priming bulb did you get? On a 407 HDI I drove the Laser bulbs were useless. They still let air in and when they didn't leak the one way valve wasn't really a valve at all. A scrapyard genuine item seemed to actually keep the diesel going one way ; towards the engine.
I'd had said the glow plugs being an indirect diesel engine but I would expect it to start better when warm.

Thanks for the quick reply, engine temperature seems to make very little difference unless it is restarted with seconds of being shut down, although even then it's not as quick as I'd expect.
I didn't change the bulb, is was the P/O so I can't be sure it's good. I will try priming until solid in the morning and look for leaks.
Thanks again,
James

I forgot to say one more thing. Once the bulb is hard try to start the car then .

Its got to be air somewhere if its a curse word to restart hot, as above but you could also try starting/ running it from a can to eliminate leaks in the fuel lines.

Are you sure the HG is ok? They can be a curse word to start if that starts to go, even when they seem to run fine once started.

I think its sorted, for now anyway. I tried priming but the bulb wouldn't go hard. I found some fuel seeping out from what I think is the drain on the side of the fuel filter housing. The white plastic screw is held in with a steel lock tab and had cracked so I put a lump of chewing gum on and it started fine. I've dome 200 miles in the car today and the engine has always started well. I'm not sure what the screw is actually for, I know the front screw is for draining water. I am now on the hunt for a new housing.
Thanks all
James

thats probably not what he needs, it sounds like a later engine, its a small thermostat iirc, there are small coolant channels under the filter housing.
