Hi just wondered if there was anyone with any expirence with old style gearbox ecu my 1986 corolla has an auto box.. 1st gear long second is long but a little shorter than 1st.
But 3rd and 4th engage near enough straight after each other... so my question is it possible to mod the gearbox to hold 3rd and 4th a little longer ??

I doubt it has an ECU for the gearbox it will be mechanical, you can probably get it rebuilt to alter the shift points but that's about it.

Hi, has it got a kickdown cable (although that is not it's sole function) because that tells the gearbox how much throttle is being used, It could want adjusting. If the gearbox has a vacuum pipe from the manifold to the box, that does the same thing, so check for leaks or splits.

It does have a kickdown cable would that effect 3rd and 4th being so close togther they are literally next to each other. It will go into 3rd then a second later will go into 4th

The question is- does it need to hold 3rd longer? Does it struggle in 4th when it shifts? My car is pretty much flicked straight to 4th at 30 and anything above its in 5th. Does it do this if you drive it quite hard as well as normally? Initially I'd say it was normal shifting behaviour unless it does it when you are driving close to W.O.T.
Edit: thanks proboards for not letting me post a vehicle related acronym. It's clear the post has been written by someone with a penchant for Burberry caps..

It does it when you drive it hard or drive it like a granny... would like it to hold 3rd longer. reason being as soon as it gets into 4th it lags and I'm not a chav otherwise I'd own a saxo with a big fart can exhsust and lambo doors

Hi, I would look at the kickdown cable because as I said earlier it tells the gearbox what you're doing with the throttle. As it is holding onto 1 and 2 for a long time it thinks you're driving flat out. The quick 3 to 4 change is normal and is done for economy reasons to have you in the higher gear. So I would think possibly the cable inner is frayed and stopping the movement of it or it's broken and the valve inside is jammed up. But in the first instance the cable should be checked for adjustment and operation.

Also when did the box last have it's fluid changed and filters cleaned? That can make a big difference to its behavoiur

Just wondered how prevalent the fault was. The edit bit wasn't a dig at you, pro-boards turns Wide Open Throttle to 'what' which is annoying. I want to type W O T not 'what'.. I also noticed I missed a word out which looks like I was having a pop which I wasn't, sorry about that.
