I've a cracked and couple of bits missing dash and need to get it repaired Don't want it flocked ,leather skin covered or a fibreglass replacement Anyone I've spoken to says it can't be recovered and if you cover over the top,of the original then the holes for,the vents are too small, and they can't guarantee it will be crease free
Can mine be repaired ,I was thinking of filling the crack and trying to vinyl paint it Any other ideas Ta

I assume it's a steel frame with bonded foam that is then covered with a plastic finish that is embossed to look like normal vinyl ? Not much you can do about a perfect repair as it was an "all in one" process to manufacture in that the plastic outer layer had the foam attached to it in a mould rather than the other way round. I suppose you could find another dash without damage in the area that needs repair on yours and then cut repair sections that could be heat welded in place but you might as well then source a better dash in the first place. You are dealing with old technology plastic that is affected by the sun. After a while the polymers (?) evaporate leaving a brittle material that then easily cracks. Not much you can do to reverse the process. Personally I'd forget about making a repair along the lines you suggest as the crack will simply reappear if just filled. The above is my interpretation of the problem and not proven fact The only way I can see a decent result would be to removed ALL the out plastic leaving just the foam core bonded to the steel frame. Then lay a couple of sheets of fibreglass tissue over the core and sand to smooth finish when cured before painting.

Have a look at some of the Australian websites it's a common problem out there and I'm pretty sure they repair them.
