just asking if anyone can recommend any other car forums to browse/ join where cars on the cusp of retro/ classic status are accepted, I respect the rules of this site and love it but my budget due to mortgage / wife kids/ etc mean I'm Enjoying less 60s 70s 80s stuff lately, my interest is more in cars between the old banger and nearly sort after sort of thing..... And as was recently pointed out by someone on here ain't retro!! I will carry on posting on here as I have my opinions but am keen to embrace any type of car, it would be boring if we all liked the same thing after all... My days of capris, cortinas, escorts etc have gone,,,,,,, so are there any other forums for mercs, jags, and other 90s cars worth looking at??? Not knocking this great forum but want to look at other more in my opinion "modern classics"

This forum is the only one I use.
The idea that someone else can tell you what is/isn't retro is laughable. I'm sure the person who told you that was probably on 10 posts, I wouldn't worry about it.
I joined this place because of my mk2 Polo, which is definitely retro, but the more I've loitered on here the more modern stuff I post. I've got a thread for my '97 Alfa 155 too. In fact I had a 2001 Multipla which I didn't post on here because IMO it wasn't suited, but then people were asking about it and others posted it, so when I bought another I thought what the hell and started a thread for it.
If someone doesn't like it or think it's retro then they don't have to open the thread. If the moderators think it's not appropriate then they will delete it.
There is no place like this, it is accepting and open minded, there is very little negativity and as forums go, it's a breath of fresh air. You won't find another - but if you do let me know.

Occasionally I'll look in on a couple of marque specific forums (Merc and Triumph) but invariably I end up back here.
More helpful than most other forums, and the variety of stuff is unsurpassed.

For me, and this is only my opinion it as much a state of mind as anything else. The word 'retro' derives from the Latin prefix retro, meaning backwards, or in past times it can be used to describe objects, like cars, motorcycles etc and attitudes from the recent past that no longer seem to be what would currently be described to be modern. It suggests a fundamental change in the way we relate to the past. The term retro appears to be different from more traditional forms of revivalism, retro suggests an almost ironic longing consideration of the recent past. So pretty much anything that could be considered to be 'old tech' is retro, and as car design moves fairly quickly retro could be anything that is as new as a ten year old car, or possibly newer than that! I think the term retro car doesn't really have a clear definition in relation to the age of the vehicle, unlike the term classic car which in the UK atleast is a term generally referred to as a vehicle of at least 25 years old, however some people define a car 15-25 years old as a 'modern classic' which perhaps is another term for retro car? To confuse matters further you also get 'retro style' this is style that is consciously derivative or imitative of trends, modes, fashions, or attitudes of the recent past. So for examples of this in the automotive world would be cars like the VW Beetle, Fiat 500, 2005-2010 Ford Mustang, and even the styling on the Jaguar X-type harks back to Jaguars past. Retro style refers to new things that display characteristics of the past. It is mostly the recent past that retro seeks to recapitulate, focusing on the products, fashions and artistic styles produced since the Industrial Revolution, of Modernity. Does this make sense, or am i just twittering on? As I said, this is only my opinion, but I reckon you're on the right forum buddy, if someone thinks your car isn't retro, or isnt cool, or whatever, that doesn't matter, it's their hang up not yours. Enjoy your car, enjoy writing about your car, and there's a fair chance the people will enjoy reading about your car. They say variety is the spice of life, well there's plenty of spice on this forum, there's something here's for everyone... As a side note, my own "twelve cars in a year" thread in the readers rides section currently features a 2004 Jaguar X-type. Some might say that's not very retro either, but it's eleven years old, and no one has complained about it yet.

its not just about the R-word.
this forum is quite squarely aimed at modified cars, whos age can vary a bit depending on if the finished product is modded in a cool way. a stock version of a 'late model' car you can see on the street every day will generally be met with derision, but if its modified in a way that makes it cool/different, it becomes acceptable.
that is what many people fail to recognise, then get the hump when other members tell them this is not the place for such things. its not ALL about the age of the vehicle.
so if its modified in a way that makes its interesting or different, its acceptable. if its just a standard car, try AS or bangernomics.

I've owned and modified many many cars, but found the w202 merc range a superb cheap great car to modify and personalise but it seems not generally accepted here as retro, whilst I disagree with that I m merely asking if any other forums for cars on the cusp, I don't do car shows anymore due to attitudes of some people I've had my share of nice classics but my budget dictates rather more cheaper classic stuff, hence my interest in jaguar and mercs from the 90s,, I have had some positives on here so can't complain !! Just looking ideas from different forums Also picked up a comment on here by mod about Rovers/mg models not being retro!!! Utter rubbish, some of the rovers on here are great especially the r8 models and the Honda variant

90's cars have definitely hit the "retro" category now. Put an E36 BMW or Mk1 Clio in front of anyone and they'll say it's retro. It doesn't really matter what anyone else tells you anyway, if you like the forum then stick around

You mean there's more on this t'internet thing than just RR? Pics links or I don't believe it Have heard the rumours before but never seen myself. My gran has a mint Golf Gti in the garage, forums like PistnHeads / Turbosport / AS /Barrys etc are fab ... you know the stories Or try forums aimed at your car / manufacturer One of the ground-rules here is "no negativity" so if anyone tells you it's too new/standard/high, just ignore 'em

I find autoshite www.autoshite.com is quite a good forum for older cars. The Jaguar slightly falls between two stools, I agree. I don't know of a model-specific forum for the Jaguar XJ8 - it does not seem to have an xj40.com equivalent. XJ40.com is pretty good for the X300 (the two cars are very similar under the skin) - but the V8 Jaguars are fairly different. There are a couple of non-specific forums - www.jaguarforum.com the UK based one, and its USA based equivalent www.jaguarforums.com. I visit the American one now and then - the XJ40 section is fairly quiet, but the forum is friendly and knowledgeable. It may be the XJ8 section is busier. The British one I haven't bothered with much. It doesn't even have an XJ40 section for a start. I have also found it a bit abrasive at times; parts of it are reminiscent of the less desirable sections of Piston Heads. This view may be unfair - since it could be I have been unlucky. Jag-lovers tends to cover much older Jaguars (probably the bulk is for the XJ-S/XJ40 and before) - and is a quiet site nowadays. The very old fashioned 'dawn of the internet' forum software does not help. - It is actually an email based thing! With Mercedes sites, I'm sure you know a lot more than I do!!

Utter rubbish, some of the rovers on here are great especially the r8 models and the Honda variant I'm not quite sure what the problem is... You have this all-positive thread: retrorides.proboards.com/thread/145914/daily-driver-mercdaily-driver-mercThis all-positive thread: retrorides.proboards.com/thread/175840/1998-jaguar-xj8And this thread where the only negativity is when you complain that not enough people are singing your/your car's praises: retrorides.proboards.com/thread/170642/mercedes-w202-anotherIf the issue is that you're not getting a dozen hallelujahs with each update, then look at the threads which do; look at what people are praising, and what they are saying. bigperm has put up lots of threads about his '90s Mercs, which have been well received so check them out and see what people like: retrorides.proboards.com/user/1464/recent_threadsFrom the very early days, this forum has been brilliant. The credo has always been about attitude, not age. A '98 C class is the same as a '98 Mondeo, Vectra, Accord or 3 Series; stock they're just washing machines, appliances to convey you from A to B... But modify one well and they can be something special. *n

Also picked up a comment on here by mod about Rovers/mg models not being retro!!! Utter rubbish, some of the rovers on here are great especially the r8 models and the Honda variant I think you've read too much into that. rmad simply meant that he was allowing THE 75 to be posted in the for sale section even though it's 2001. I think it's safe to say he meant the car was getting in on its looks, not the fact it's an MGR car and the doors weren't being opened to all post 2000 MGR cars.
