Some stuff from the past couple of weeks... THEN I got new tyres! New tyres just feel ace don't they? 205/50/17 Uniroyal Rainsport 3s. Wanted some lower profile 215s but the diameter difference between the front and rear 235/45/17s would have been too much for my liking. They had 205/50/17s on before I replaced them anyway, But they have cured like every steering/handling issue i've ever had. No more tramlining, no more vibration. I also gave her a DIY tracking and its spot on. Dialled out some camber and aligned it all. Drives perfect. Also, £60 a tyre then my mate fitted them for £10. I do really have a lot of respect for RS3s though, and since my mates have driven my car they have all converted. I think they are the perfect tyre seeing as I do a lot of trips and 90% of the time end up driving in the rain. You can pretty much drive like you do in the dry. It really doesnt make a difference if its wet. Loving the 944, they're really doing it for me at the moment. I agree on the Rainsports 3's. Got them on a couple of my cars. What I did notice though which I'm sure you're aware, they are very grippy at the expense of wear. They were done after about 6000 miles and the last couple of thousand miles they produced a noticeable wobble on my Golf, which I put down to the wear across the tread. It made me paranoid about top-mounts, bushes etc but it went away after changing the fronts. Changed to Vredestein Ultrac Vorti's, another great tyre and so far a bit better wearing than the RS3's. Cheers AL.

Nice work with the washer pump, do you have a link for where you bought it from? Cheers, it worked out nicely because the 3 screws on the new bracket sit perfectly in the hole left on the original bracket when you take the pump off, so you literally just sandwich the original bracket in between Tis this one: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221839941631?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AITAlthough I'm sure any round pump could be made to work! Cheers AL. Thanks! Yeah they are quick wearing tyres, but then in the sizes I need the RS3s are almost half the price of any other tyre I'd be happy using, so it kind of outweighs the quick wear rate. Plus the 944 is fairly light, so I don't think it'll shred through them as fast as if it were a big barge. I might try Vredesteins one day, I know they are supposed to be very good. For now i'm really happy with the Uni's so would definitely go for another set when they are worn

The wheel bearing is hardly an issue, i'll go ahead and readjust them both. The 'oil leak' is actually a drip every once in a while. It collects on the under tray so looks worse than it is. He did however comment on how clean it is underneath and couldn't believe it had done 177k! Also, check the mileage on the sheet. I bought it on the 31st of July last year and have done 5000 odd miles. Fair change from the 400 it was doing before! Sigh of relief.

Been a couple of months since my last post. After I got back from my trip, I decided to neaten up the old 944. Wanted to find the source of this oil leak and do a few bits and bobs. I changed the oil for some millers classic 20w50 and a new Porsche filter. figured the grade couldnt do it any harm with the engine having 177k on it now! I went to remove the old filter and it was JUST hand tight. It had to have worked itself loose because i'm really pernickety with tightening oil filters. Either way, new filter tightened properly and new oil. No leaks Tray has been bone dry for the last month or so. I also put a couple of new studs for the manifold for cylinder 4. One had snapped and the other nut had worked its way loose and was leaking passed. So thats all sorted now. Took the roundels off and used some black vinyl I had lying about to do the centre of the lower part of the front bumper. It was stone chipped and really needed covering up. All in all the engine seems to be going really well in fact and has loads of power.

So all i have to do now is wait for you to find something to replace it with

Those fuel filters are a pain in a chuff aren't they? If they're in the same place as mine was, I had a right struggle. Probably just me being a poof though.
Power results are very good for the age and mileage. Bet you're very pleased.
Keep it up.

Not enough room to get a decent angle with a spanner! Cue petrol in the armpits.

I particularly like the colour, such a nice shade of blue, plus with the wheel colour, it looks awesome! Cheers, Andrew thanks! I'm actually hunting for the paint code so I can re-paint the front bumper and fit a turbo rear valance this winter. It really is a lovely colour when all polished up

Lovely car, I adore the blue! Where did you get the engine mou td from? Might get myself a set! cheers! The engine mounts I just bought from eBay. They are Meyle ones and fluid filled. Make sure you get fluid filled ones otherwise you'll be replacing them once a year, and they are not particularly fun to replace!

Its been 2 months, so what have I been doing? Naff all until this week really. Basically I had no real mechanical jobs to do this winter, and as much as I was very tempted to splash out on necessary things like new wheels, i've finally made the decision to get the front end resprayed. It's not a Porsche colour, and in fact not really any specific colour. The paint shop thats doing the job has said its a 90% match to some Mitsubishi blue, so they are using that as a base and tweaking it to match. The owner is a really sound bloke so I'm confident they'll do a good job of it! It'll be getting the front valance, front bumper, headlight covers and badge panel, bonnet and they are fixing the door where some paint had come off after I removed the roundels. They are also blending it into the wings etc so it all matches. I've told the bloke that if theres anything he finds that needs sorting to just do it, so it should come back sparkling! Its booked in for the 6th of Feb, so it gave me a couple of weeks to decide what I wanted to do. I had originally planned to do an S2 conversion but with Darryl having done it already and Edd about to do it, I wanted something a bit different. Quick conversation with Lane from DWA in America and i've gone for smoothing the original front bumper. don't think i've ever seen it on a euro bumper (apart from Lanes). I've never fibreglassed or fillered anything so it was interesting. Along with that I decided to make the paint shops job easier i'd strip the whole front end and put everything back together with new bolts etc. While everything is off id tidy up behind the bumper and clean it all up. So, starting with the lights. For some reason i've never noticed this but the indicators had horrendous tint on them. Goodbye. Then got the bumper in. Previous paint job was epically lazy. The light trims are a 3 screw affair, it wouldnt have been hard to take them off to paint. Nubs cut off the bumper and all the holes backed with fibreglass. Getting rid of the headlamp washers also. Zero tat on this bumper Two coats of filler and thats that. Was stood sanding by hand for ages to the point where i'd gone 'there must be an easy way to do this'. Que trip to tool station for a detail sander and its now in the top 10 fav tools. Decided if they light surrounds are now going to be on show I better tart them up. So a bit of black and they will look roight smart screwed into the bumper. Good job I removed this for the paint shop to be honest because as expected it snapped all the bolts. It wasnt really fitted right anyway. The air duct for the rad was broken so i'll phone Mr Porsche tomorrow to find out if i'll need to sell my kidneys for one or not. If so i'll put my new fibreglass skills to the test again! While I was behind there I cleaned everything up with degreaser to remove all the muck. One thing that has ALWAYS annoyed me is that the previous painter/butcher had sprayed some silver and blue onto the rad and brackets which just looked a bit naff. Out with the black paint again and it looks noice. At the same time I did some faffery to delete the headlamp washer piping and pump. I'll need to put some new connectors on for the lights to replaced the tattered boots on the originals but pretty clean in general underneath. Thats where I'm at so far anyway. Going to buy some stainless bolts for holding the lights in and make some plates up with countersunk screws for the gaps left at the side where the trim used to sit. Need to fiberglass over the nubs that hold the rivnuts for the lights and replace the once that I had to knock out. I'll borrow all the other bolts from work. Still have to paint the clamp brackets for the wings and paint where the valance meets them with underseal to protect it. But once all that faffing is done it can go in for paint and look good again. Oh and I'm finally replacing my rear valance! Very clean genuine turbo one was for sale on ebay in the wrong section so I pocketed it for £70. All the studs in tact too. So thatll get painted along with the rest of the car and i'll fit it when I have time. and for your eyeballs, this is Lanes car, and an idea of what my front end will look like in about a months time...
