I have a 'Friend' - Well, he's a customer but we do socialise too so a bit of both. He know's I'm a car nut and love most things old especially Fords. (He doesn't hold it against me lol) Now, this friend has financial means way beyond what I'll ever even dream of but he truly doesn't 'Shout' about it. Now, onto cars, his car of choice is a 2012 Bentley Convertible - A nice grey example with a private plate. Anyway, to cut a long story short he popped into my work on Friday with a Spanking new 65 plate Bentley that the dealer had lent him for the weekend. (He popped in to the dealer to see if the new shape convertible was any better than his) So basically, the dealer said 'Take it way and enjoy for the weekend' which he did... Now, as we were being jovial I asked him THAT question.... "Why would you choose to buy a new Bentley, when you could have a Rolls Royce" - O dear. He looked at me like I had 2 heads and said "The Rolls is too In Yer Face" Eh? So 3 tonnes of Bentley convertible that cost 200k with your name as the plate isn't? I just don't get it? What am I missing? He popped in a minute ago and showed me a red 80's 911 Targa that he has also seen but doesn't want "to take the risk with and old car" so at least he does have some car passion lol.

A new Rolls Royce and a new Bentley are (relatively speaking) worlds apart these days. Not like in the 80s when it was pretty much a badge-sharing exercise. Bentley is more a car you drive, a Rolls is a car you are driven in.

I remember hearing a story from a friend about having a rapid ride down the motorway in a turbo bently, it expired and the owner rang and ordered a new one (as you do) whilst waiting for recovery

Blimey, I never realised what a different beast they are these days. VIP, I can clearly see what you mean now. I would still want the Rolls mind...

agreed with above points, bentley owners get out the drivers door, rolls owners have the rear door opened for them.
as opposed to maybach owners, who rap about their cars lol

Is it just me? Or does the inset rectangular headlights on the Roller look a bit like the dreadful, "federal" headlights that were fitted to big Volvos in the USA.

I think the choice comes down to whether you want to look like an oligarch or a footballer? ;-p
(But which of us wouldn't want to be able to make that choice?)

Obviously a clever and very successful man. Slightly confuses me when a man like that wouldn't take a "risk" on an 80's 911 while happy to drive a Bently that has prob lost 50k in the last three years and likely still binning £500 pcm? Indeed I understand that I know nothing hence my very humble existence in comparison........without a Bently or a 911........but still.......

I would love to be in the position to be able to choose ..... But for me its got to be a Bentley, its probaby just because its called a Bentley,as it is really a big fast very posh VW in reality. When ever i think of Bentley , one of these with a Terry Thomas character behind the wheel springs to mind!

My favourite Bentley.... for gents but still a monster, pre dates footballers/kids/rappers interest in the brand which is what spoils things for me

Always liked the look of the Bentley Turbo R and those pre-war Blower Bentleys. Many years ago I was out on a job site (road works) and a convoy of old, mostly pre-war, Bentleys went through our site. Some organized event with cars from many countries involved. I forget the details now but it was in all the papers here at the time. Love the sound of those big capacity blown four bangers winding out through the gears.

He even said that the 911 is on the up. I think that as he has zero mechanical knowledge, the peace of mind of a new car sways him over a classic. Shame.
