A 2003 ML270Cdi has appeared for sale locally. One owner since new, used mainly to tow a caravan, FSH, maintained regardless of cost, all receipts etc. We know the couple who own it to say hello to - they also have a Pug 404 ute and a 2CV, so they are nice people Anyway, it is cheap (for Aus) at $4,500 ono, only concern is it has done 387k km. Are the OM612 engines okay with those sorts of km? Is there anything specific I should look out for? I know the older Merc diesels have a reputation for being unbreakable, not so sure about the modern ones though.

Look out for blown injector seals, you'll see carbon buildup around the injector. Turbo's can fail, but the engine itself is bomb proof.

As above and glow plugs can be a swine to get out but other than that a cracking diesel motor . Mileage doesn't matter if it's been serviced regularly

That sounds like an excellent purchase. Try and find out if the trans fluid has been changed, these probably had the "sealed for life" box and the owner probably knew that was a load of cock and got it changed anyway but it's worth checking. Let us know how you get on.

Have a drive of it first, my OH wanted one and we had a couple of test drives in different ones as I couldnt believe they were supposed to drive in the way they do. Same year Lexus or Ford Maverick are much nicer places to be.

It put to bed the notion that the straight sixes were smoother than the vee sixes. In an ML it should be okay though, they're much better insulated from everything noisy and dirty.

Thanks for the replies. Good info to have if I decide to keep looking. I say "keep looking" because it has disappeared from Gumtree - was put up on Friday and by Sunday evening it had gone Obviously it was a good buy. Anyway, I shall keep my eyes peeled.

I have a late W210 E320cdi which is the last of the straight sixes OM613
Blooming lovely engine and mine has now done 195k miles. Still starts straight up and smooth as silk. As said, watch for injector seating washers and any leaks on the fuel system as ANY air in the system will stop it running. Mechanically they seem almost indestructible.

Late to the party with this comment but I managed this with an OM612:
