Thought I might aswell start contributing, so here's what I've got....
For my first car I wanted something different and retro... and this fitted the bill nicely!
1982 Vauxhall chevette silhouette
I've had this just over a year now - Bought in London it was in the same family from new, 22k on the clock, completely stock and garaged for most of its life up until about 10 years ago. Since then I'm pretty sure it's just been used to nip to the shops and back.
This is how it was when bought it - flic.kr/p/b9nVaM
So what needed doing? - wings were shot and surface rust was starting to appear in areas. There was also an half empty can of oil in theboot ( which I realised when I took it home was because it leaked like a sieve! )

It's still got the 1256 so if I can't have power it might as well be a cool cruiser... for now! # Cue upgrading the original mono radio... My aim atm is that everything I do can be reversible. So instead of cutting holes in the parcel shelf and door cards I made up some new kicker panels.

Passed my test in October, and gave it a bit of an update. Celebrated by making use of that rwd Another factor behind getting a retro was the supposedly low insurance costs. I got a shock when the cheapest I could get was 2 grand!! To far now, so went with it. I took it off the road during mid feb to attempt to fix the oil leak. It was an engine out job - so a lot of learning took place! Oil... Oil everywhere!

After all that... it still leaks! so either I've done something wrong or it's just how it was in the 70s ha. I'll take it out and try again at somepoint. Drove it for a month like this, then the engine sounded as if it was knocking... luckily it turned out to be the viscous fan making very very loud noises. So down to crawley scrap yard and got myself an aircon fan out of an astra van. Fitted the radiator nicely and solved the problem. Forward a couple of months to summer, Got some 15s as i was getting sick of motorway driving witht he 13s. A pic from billing 2015. Next.... decided to do some preventative rust proofing and I wanted to see how bad the floors were... :/ To my surprise - they were mint!

That pretty much brings the project up to date. After having the wings gaffer taped up for about a year I've finally saved up and bought a welder and taken it off the road for the winter. This is how it sits currently. After taking off the rotten wings I was expecting similar behind it. But it's looking ok so far! Bought a pair of wings for £50 and have started some rust treatment.

So that left me without a daily..... Say hello to my new purchase ha. 1988 mk2 Fiesta L 1.1l 48k on the clock and pretty solid overall. Whereas the chevette's never been welded this has had it's fair share. Only cost me £600 to insure aswell so well pleased! That may seam like a lot but most are still paying over a grand in their second year. Cue the pics - oh excuse the transformer sticker... It's how I bought it! Very nice looking car! Nice Fiesta too. I've got a mk3 in the same colour (with more rust ), don't see many on the roads these days!

Great read so far. Love that Chevette. Always been a classics man but i prefer safety and reliability of 90s and early 00s motors so until I get a classic for the weekends when I am a little older I'll admire others from a distance.
600? I'm on my 4th year and paying 1600 for an Astra 1.8 coupe...do love it though so well worth it.
Any plans for the Fiesta?

Very cool first car in this day and age. Exactly. Living the dream! This is about the same age as my first car was and I've got to say, you seem to be keeping really good care of it. Where's the oil leak coming from? Is it loosing a lot or is it just 'marking its territory' when parked?

Chevette looks awesome, I like the idea of reversible modifications, does seem a shame to cut stuff up that's survived fine since the 70s.
Looks right at home at Billing!

Wheels, lower it finish off the service - brake fluid, coolant. Give it a good tcut and touch up that red oxide area by the door. Areas that need looking at in the future = battery tray and rear boot floor. I've been thinking about getting a Louvre for it to complete the collection ha, opinions?

Cheers, well it's in such good nick I want to keep it that way - as I've said before it's never been welded before! It's the rear crankshaft seal. Cardboard underneath seems to be solving the problem for now ha.
