This whole thread has shot off in several directions from bstardchild's original missive, but it's been educational. I never know where any of the threads I start will go - but this one has been "emotional" The clique thing seems to have taken some hold. It's odd 'cos when I joined RR about 5 years ago, I viewed anyone with about 1500 posts as a bit of a regular and 'in'. Here I am with the same-ish number of posts and I don't consider myself close to being 'in'. In that time I have met one other RR member in the flesh, and only associate directly here with maybe 5 or 6 peeps. Higher in this thread, others with more numerous posts have posted the same. I guess it's not unexpected in a global forum with such a diversity of car tastes. The clique thing worries me....... not sure what will fix it either because it's not how I see it either which means my perception is off or I'm part of the clique and I'm not! It's rather thought-provoking of forums and society in general. I'm not saying it's a good or a bad thing, but I guess it is what it is. I guess the message is if you don't think you're 'in', jump right in and contribute. ^ agreed 100% However based on the "internet/forum" rules that advice only applies to the 1% who will actually do that Sorry, it's Friday night and I have a bottle of wine in me, so excuse the ramblings that have no retro car content whatsoever I'm not far behind you

If anything, this thread bringing it into the open has kinda reassured me. The use of the word 'clique', which I've probably not helped by repeating, sends a negative message. Groups and sub-groups are a natural part of society : we naturally associate with those who share an interest. Yes, we as a group are all interested in retro-cars, but there are sub-groups with particular interests within it. If we all liked the same thing, it would be boring. Man, this is getting too deep. Have a car pic.

Long long ago there was a new, fresh and exciting forum, rough around the edges, that anybody into cars would access as often as possible. I remember lurking on here when the forum was just a pup and i vowed that when i got back to blighty id buy myself an old car and 'do my thang'. Eminating from that was my first 'meet' with other like minded petrol heads at a pub in East Anglia, organized by the OP himself and, its fair to say, it was BRILLIANT!! So many of us turned up that Bstardchild had to climb a hoarding to take 'an aerial' shot of all the cars present. I can remember the pics being put up and Hotwire dribbling at the mix of cars and enthusiasm there. The point of this post is to say that, somewhere along the line, the forum has gone from 'Morris Isis with cut coils, a port and polished head with twin SUs..' to a Ken Block ( who?) special. The mere notion that people want to, need to or should vote on their favourite builds seems a bit crazy to me. Those years back when i took my ratty Scimitar to that meet wasnt about impressing others or demonstrating my Retro credentials, it was about doing what pleased me and loving my passion for four wheels. That meeting showed me that i wasnt alone in that notion, we were ALL just doing what we wanted to do and we didnt care whether what we did ( or didnt do) was up for discussion, it was all about the feeling of just doing it! At that time I didnt see anything 'clicky' but, sure, the forum has its in jokes and all mates together schtik but thats true of all forums. I don't post much here because there is an awful lot of stuff on the forum that doesnt interest me, the place has moved away from spit and sawdust car love to something that is more glossy magazine, just my opinion. There is a line in that James Bond Film Live and Let Die.. ' Names is for Tombstones' Id say 'Awards is for Hollywood'. Keep it simple for simple people like me.

Zeb : Date Registered: Mar 13, 2007 at 10:39pm First Retro Rides Awards : December 2005 : wiki.retro-rides.org/Retro%20Rides%20Awards%202005.ashxWe've done the awards for as long as we've been a forum. The reason you are seeing more polished and finished cars is because we've been building these cars for 10 years or more. Most Anticipated Car Of 2006Nominations : Slater's Mini - Got finished and looked ace - magazine featured NightmaresRacing's Kadett - Got finished and looked ace - magazine featured NightmaresRacing's Cortina Van - Got finished and look amazing - magazine featured iRocco's 'Rocco - ?? Keefy's VW Beetle - STILL not finished Racer86' Next Project - His KP Starlet which he still has and featured in numerous magazines Marina_V8's Pick-up - Didn't get finished (recently for sale??) BenzBoy's V8 Mercedes - STILL not finished Wayne Allman's VW Splitscreen drag bus - Finished and looked incredible - magazine featured CR500Dom's Kadett - STILL... STILLLLLL!!! Not finished. Things haven't changed so much... One of the earliest threads on this forum is about BryanF's Datsun 510, which is an incredible car, closely followed by the Hilmersson Manta which is of the sort of build quality most cars never achieve. We have ALWAYS liked the aspirational cars, we have always strove to get there, even though most of us are building on a tiny budget. It is what makes us, us.

This has almost feck all to do with the original question poll thing but it may help with the can't be arsed/I'm a luddite and linkys confuse me.
I have seen on other forums that the latest uploaded pictures appear in thumbnails at the top of the specific area of the forum.
Say Readers Rides and the General Board?
Cos nothing makes me less likely to click on a thread than it being called 'MGB' or 'Austin Princess' they just don't interest me, however I'm pretty sure there are people doing awesome things with them and catching sight of a pic as I float about the readers rides board would have me click something I wouldn't normally click.
Also how wibblepoo is it when you see a thread entitled Alfa Romeo Montreal, and all thats inside is 2 pictures of a wheel bearing and 15 pages of comments.
Sorry, I'll go away and break something now.

It's probably already been said before - But to vote 'properly' (i.e. not just because you're their mate) requires you do have a proper knowledge of everyone in contention's thread. Often that's not the case.
I'm always jaded with any internet voting type of thing, as they can all too easily turn into a 'who's got the most friends' contest.

Where is the voting thread?! When I come on I generally browse the readers ride section and the readers other modifications. If I have time I'll have a look in the general section, the cars for sale and stolen. Have I missed it in a section I haven't visited? Tbh I didn't even know it was happening,

God has it been that long, CR500Dom & Keefy FFS finish the bloody things Must restart those local meets they were good fun I`m secretly quite humbled that a little Kadett has been someeones "Most anticipated" for the Last 10 years And BC, yes you should I didn't make as many as I`d like to but will definitely make up for that this year if they start up again I suppose I should also answer the original questions posed too. Simple answer is, I don't spend enough time on here now and I`m not really as involved as I was a few years ago, to Vote. There is so much content that I never get time to explore.
