Can someone help me ID my bike engine age for conversion?

Hello Retro Rides.

Bit of an odd one here but i am in need of some help and you guys seem to know quite a lot. I know it isn't directly related to a car, but is in a way.

After reading about bike conversions i thought "can't be that hard" so i bought an engine and thought id have a crack.

I have had bikes before in my time, but i am by no means an expert. I got looking through ebay and found one within budget on bits, threw one in and thought it would not be enough to make it mine, well i ended up winning it. With these spur of the moment buys i am a little stumped and in need of some help.

The engine is a 998 honda unit from a fireblade although was also listed as a CBR1000RR online. A chap had it come to him with a kit car he bought and the engine came as a spare. I bought the engine as a basic block, no carbs, no loom or anything like that. now i originally bought this engine simply to mock up an engine cradle and diff mount. I had no intentions of using it as a running motor, but now my curiosity has got the better of me. I've cranked the motor over and it returns good compression rates.

My problem is i can not identify exactly what year or model bike this engine is from so i am struggling to find a loom, ignition module and coils for it because i don't know what year i am looking for.

The engine is stamped with 998cc on the side and also has the code ABBBBB stamped just below it.

Would anyone be able to help me ID this engine or does anyone know of anywhere that would be able to give me a better idea of what model and year bike it came from? Other than popping into my local Honda specalist and paying for their time I am unsure what to do.

Not sure how Honda list their engine and frame number but if it's similar to Yamaha the engine and frame usually start with the same characters ie 3GM, 4FH etc

If you cross ref those codes it'll tell you which model, which year and which country they're from

Thanks very much! I've tried googling the engine code but have had no luck whatsoever.

Other than trawling through eBay and comparing photos with the hope the seller has listed it correctly I think I might have to pop down to the local ghetto to the J bike specialist shop.

Personally I would say thats nicked, its had the engine number removed and restamped (badly - the letters aren't even the right size or font) with that ABBBBB business, I would be very dubious about its identity unless you had a cast iron trail of history showing a very good reason for that.

It's from a cbr1000f, the bike before the fireblade, one of these

The engine number has been ground off and replaced.

I was a little curious about the engine code, especially when I read it earlier today, never paid attention to it before. Just so manny Bs in there made me wonder.

Came from a far older bike than I would have hoped, know of a legitimate 918 for £700, might give that a crack.

such a blatant renumbering is likely to have been done as part of something like a police stolen recovered operation. a thief trying to pass off a hooky motor as genuine wouldnt want it to look messed with so would keep it as the original format and likely only change a number or two.
