Hiya, what does this indicate?- a truck I'm looking at buying was manufactured in 1985 but the DVLA have it first registered in 2010.. it's RHD and I don't think it's imported... does that mean it was written off and re-registered or something? Something dodgy or am I making a fuss about nothing?? Cheers! Here's an unrelated image to say thanks

has it been off the road a while?
If so, the most likely senario is that it wasn't put on the new DVLA database until 2010. Is quite common with classic motorbikes. Probably nothing dodgy, but check all documents for history.

Has it come from Ireland?

Thinking obliquely, could it have been used as site transport at some large industrial premises/ airport/ military base etc where it never went on public roads so didn't need to be registered until it was sold off?

My Monza spent a couple of years in Gemany Log book said registered in 1987 but was on a 1985 "B" plate But elsewhere it said declared "manufactured in 1985"

As suggested above, pretty common for cars and vans used on very large areas of private ground to be bought and remain unregistered until they change owners. A written off motor that lost it's identity for some reason and was considered a 'new' build when it was returned to the road would probably have had a Q plate assigned. I'm sure a write off that retained it's ID and plate would never have the date of first registration updated. Probably nothing suspicious. What's the seller got to say about it?

Plate shows time of first registration, some vehicles are mothballed from new and registered later. I believe there are a handful of '80s minis that are still unregistered, though the risk is that changes in legislation will lock them out - someone with a Lamm convertible panicked and registered it in the late '90s when they saw Labour making changes, same with a Polo G40 which was eventually registered on a T-plate in 1999 (they were discontinued in 1994).

Very intriguing. I hope we get to the bottom of it.

If you can prove date of manufacture (manufacturers records or glasses logbook), you can get an age related plate through the DVLA, so there is little risk of lockout due to regs. Say today, 8/12/2015, you tried to register a 1985 built mini. You submit the proof and the V5C would then state the date of first registration as 8 December 2015, but there would be a note in section 3 special notes stating "declared date of manufacture 1985" and "non-transferable registration" and you would get a "C" registration, probably with a Scottish area code and be subject to 1985 tax and MOT rules. Went through this with my motorbike. Luckily I had the original registration but had to prove age for tax exemption.

Simple answer is to get a look at the V5. If its imported it will state it at the bottom of the front page.

This often happens with ministry of defence vehicles that are only used on bases. The main difference you will find is that it shouldn't have waited three years for it's first MOT. The first MOT may not even have the reg number on it but just the chassis number. Should be easy to check on line.

Isn't there a difference, though - some of the MOT regulations are based on date of "first use", which is usually taken as date of registration, where VED exemption is based on date of manufacture? I recall reading how South Hereford Audi registered their unused 20v quattro in 1997 on an R-plate because if they'd left it any later it wouldn't have passed an MOT. Maybe the truck has been on a private plate of some sort? I know a chap with a Viva HA that's shown as first registered in the eighties some time despite being built in the sixties, and that coincided with the original registration being removed from the car and (presumably) transferred to something else.
