Fair enough ...
I tend to skim read as a picture paints a thousand words ,maybe you should've included a couple of pics , as to be honest , it doesn't paint a great picture of the work you do ..
Maybe I should read more

Some of you seem to be missing the main point that Dave Dorson and others have raised... Sure, it may get sold on and it's possibly a case of 'buyer beware' when the filler cracks and the rust comes back in a few months time, but ask yourself this: "Would you happily carry your loved ones around in this knowing that no matter how carefully you drive, it only takes yours or another road user's momentary lapse of concentration to turn what could be a fairly minor collision in something with good structural integrity into something far far worse when this potentially folds up around you like a floppy cardboard box..." No ALL of you who didn't f*#king bother reading the thread properly are missing the point and blowing smoke up some other halfwits hole who didn't read it either....

Well, you've painted over stuff I would have cut out, I can still see the faults with shiny paint over them. But if that's the standards you work to, fair enough.
I find the camper even more amusing, you berate other people's work then in the pic of the scooter you can quite clearly see the step of overlapped panels on the side repairs! Still, wo t take much disguiseopon to sort out will it.
But what would I know, I'm just an armchair expert.

That's where your right as the bay was left in with an "expert" who chopped the fook outa it everywhere, blasted it and left it outside for 6 years.... Chopped about 5mm below weld leaving nothing to work with and no other option! I'll show you pics of needs be? That van is on hold hence the reason it's tacked and primed to stop further rust untill we get back to it after bluffing our transit.... Just watch tho chum as Jeremy Kyles starting shortly

I'm not gonna backtrack, I asked the question.
I don't profess to do it for a living (I can earn more doing other things), but I do work on my own stuff when my life permits me to do so.
I'll get round to getting all the pictures off the ipad and onto photobucket so I can update my build thread properly at some stage.
My van fared a little better than yours, so the repairs are actually a fair degree less, but everything is tacked, then stitched, then ground flush, and if required (because it isn't always), I'll do a light skim of filler on there.
You're getting mega defensive, I've already said before, if you've stitched it, and not just left it tacked and ground them flat (which is how it appeared in a few of the photos!), then I'm happy to accept that as what you've done.
But crack on, keep calling me a hater, ignore the positive comments I've made, and make out like this is some sort of GB/NI fued as your mate Sheilsy seems pretty convinced it is.

No you and others saw a pic or 2 of tacked in repairs then saw the first skim of filler and assumed that's all it got, even though all repairs were stitched up more than adequate, ground down and filled to a very high standard! You also assumed they were all like bottom of drivers door which yes has a repair tacked in place after old rust cut out and think it will flex and crack as its improperly done and not strong enough which I'm sure plenty will agree is plums chum.... Anyhooooooo I'm gonna go now and enjoy my Big shiney solid Transit B) Well said that man What a bunch of bitches on here! unreal!

You tell me you wouldn't get defensive if you knocked something out in mega quick time to a very reasonable standard and someone doesn't read thread properly then starts with "is it just me" Can you blame me? As for the NI/mainland thing to be honest chum ya wanna see the curse word we have to fix here that's "fresh outa England" "motorway miles only" a lot of folk wouldn't be too handy at describing vehicles over there!

You told me you stitched it and filled over. I said pretty clearly I accept that. I've also said I'm happy to leave it there. It was a GENUINE question, one that someone else had asked too and you'd said, yourself, that if it's not an MOT repair it's acceptable. I won't pretend I didn't jump to any conclusion, but I didn't see my post and anything other than a constructive question which you've answered. As I said, I'm happy to accept your answer. To be honest, it's the Internet, I don't want you to loose any sleep over it, I'd not loose any sleep over your slagging off what I'm doing either . I find it really amusing though, that everyone is convinced I'm leading a virtual witch hunt, Dez aside, I've got no idea who the other posters are, and yes, I did chat to Dez and a few others who haven't posted on here, away from the forum, because I wasn't entirely convinced it "wasn't just me" when I posted, but they all drew the same conclusion as me. I even stated that I'm not here to rock the forum boat, in a past life on other forums I was a bit of an , but I've grown up (and tired of it) since then, I'm just in it to enjoy the hobby. I've never met you and I know nothing of your work outside of what I've seen on here. That probably won't change either. The end result does look great. I'm glad you're happy with it and I hope you enjoy your van. And yeah, I did miss the line where you said you'd stitched it, and the picture didn't look to me like you had, but that's neither here nor there, if you say you did, then I'm sure you did. .

Replies like these are far less constructive and a load more counter intuitive than any of my questions! Works both ways, those of us who've asked about the welds, haven't gone calling everyone who says it looks great, we've just asked constructive questions and stated why we (personally) thought it appeared to be done wrong. I think some folks need to be a little more reflective of their input.

The finished product looks awesome, going to be a proper second look when you see it driving around.
Sorry to say I can see why the comments have been made, having stared at the pictures as closely and possible on pages 1 and 2, it shows tacked repairs, then filler being applied to sections with no sign of any stitching or seam welding. Maybe it's just the photos, but if it's not being sold ever I guess it doesn't matter quite as much.

this thread is bizarre, i could list about 20 threads where critical welding looks the bottom of nelsons column after august bank holiday, not an eye lid is batted, even with replies like "great work mate"
this thread is like a 0.001 out of 10 severity of terrible welding, genuinely don't see why the uproar or self righteous indignation

joining panels at a non factory seam/join should be continuously welded ,rather than tacked and pugged over only on load bearing members, prescribed areas or highly stressed components. round a light cluster, a van side panel or bottom of a door skin are neither (not that i am confirming or denying they are still spotted under the filler mind you)

This thread caught my eye in a quiet moment at work is all. I disagree regarding the statement you made about the pillar as well, to my mind that should also be a continuous weld (even if you do stitch and spot, you don't want to distot it), as it's a monocoque. The doors and stuff I could't have given a fig about, they were never why I made any sort of statement. It was the sill and the pillar that I (and I've got a feeling I'm repeating what I've already said here) mistakenly thought he'd left spots on, ground back then bogged over. And, if you read the subsequent replies that other folks have made, I'm not the only one. However, I've been told by the chap who did the work that I'm mistaken, and I've accepted that and am really fairly happy to move on and let him enjoy his van. However, it seems that a fair few folks are pretty keen to make out like I'm some kind of rabble raiser intent to destroy the reputation of the Irish. On scales of what is, and what isn't bizarre...

I think the problem [ well mine is anyway ] is that people percieve different levels of work to be alright . I'm concerned that people on here will thing some of this is the right way to do something and its not . There is ' repairing' which this is and repairing which means making it look factory [ and lasting ]
Making a rear edge of a wing out of weld , onto rust covered a post , then sanding it off it is a bodge . Those panels should not be stuck together like that , and the untreated a post edge [ which you could not be asred to clean off because you couldnt be bothered to remove the wing ] will rot underneath the spog you have put on there .
The worst bodgers are the ones who cant even see they are bodgers !!
Sorry lads but i think people should see that everything on here is not the right way !

Anyway, for what it's worth, great job on the van, look's fantastic

Anyway, for what it's worth, great job on the van, look's fantastic Please also remember that ANY vehicle built in that period ( repaired or not) was built to a standard that would cause a problem if it collided with a 'modern' vehicle ... I too cringe every time i read of taking a grinder to springs, most newer springs have a progressive rate over it's design length, cutting bit off one end or the other changes that ... anyway, great van and i'm sure the builder or any future owner / driver would drive it appropriately ...
