Can you break your own car these days...

...without getting spit-roasted by the DVLA? 

If so, what trail of bureaucracy does one have to entertain?

2 ways of doing this

1 just declare the car sorn only have to do it once for life now
or
2 take the remains to a scrap yard and they give you a certificate of destruction

Or send the logbook to the DVLA with a letter stating it has been broken up for spares/ metal, they just removed the tick box option. There is no requirement to use a depolution centre as a private individual breaking your own car, obviously if you are doing it regularly eventually questions are going to be asked - probably by the local council.

i do one or two a year when their MoT's run out - given that i replace like for like i just pull off what i want from the old one and add it to the spares stock (or, back garden as my landlord calls it). i tend to transfer the same parts each time so can be very quick at dismantling. most of it's under-bonnet stuff so neighbours aren't concerned or bothered by a rotting hulk - doubt they even know it's being broken. body kit and wheels get removed just before the shell gets hauled

then i get a local scrappy chap to take the carcass away and just send the V5 to DVLA with his details on the yellow bit

However I remember a chap possibly getting into a bit of trouble with some one for doing it, local council perhaps? Can't quite remember, I will try to find it.

Ah, not as convoluted as I'd feared.

I gather most breakers will charge to collect shells robbed of parts these days due to the rock bottom cost of steel? Especially those registered to give CoDs.

Last one I stripped myself I sent off the V5C and put the new keeper as 'car dismantled. reg plates and VIN plate destroyed'. Didn't hear or receive anything back

I race bangers and all we do is write scrapped across the yellow slip once we have finished with them and send it off. Just get the usual confirmation letter back then saying you are no longer the registered keeper.

I've broken a few cars before now on the drive. When done with it I just have the shell collected and let them sort the CoD and V5. Interestingly, my Ibiza, when scrapped, never actually got removed from the DVLA database. I accidentally left the v5 in the car when it was taken away. I wrote to the DVLA stating the name and address of the dismantlers and that the car has been destroyed. Over a year on and the car is still listed with no MoT or Tax.

I only did one and that was a year or so ago.

99p start on ebay - leave enough bits on it to make it worth someone's bother and much cheaper than paying for it to be taken away by someone else.

It's down to the buyer as well what they do with the remains once the v5 has been signed over

Pay for it to be taken away? I've always been paid This had no front end, no locks, no lights. All that was left was the engine and interior Got £60 cash in hand

Mixed car scrap is between 10 and 25 a ton at the moment, you'll be lucky to find anybody to fetch it unless they live next door

That's what I was told as well, but this was a year ago when the prices were better. The scrappies round my way only wanted complete cars or they wouldn't take them, even if I offered to pay them!

A lot of the trouble I've had is finding someone who can lift it with no drivetrain. So what I do is get a huge cutter, cut the thing into chunks and move it that way.

Alternatively have a word with your "local scrap representative" and tell him what you've got. I got rid of a mk4 escort that was in a tricky spot. He called up his "work colleagues" and about 12 of them lifted the thing up and walked off down the road with it. Lovely.
