What are you trying to acheive? More power? quieter? heavier? anything can be made to fit just about anything but if its a good idea depends on what you are hoping to use the finished project for.
Thats just a bare motor on the ebay ad, it would be easier to buy a complete vehicle.

I'm looking for more power and yes quieter. The Nissan engine is super loud and the prospect of a turbo is inviting.

Why not simply add more sound insulation ?
You can get a turbo version of the current engine from a post 91 Nissan Terrano

I'm not sure I'd want to go to the effort of changing the engine just to include a turbo, when I could put a bigger engine and turbo in.

Just turbo what you have, people do it all the time with the normally aspirated transit Di lump, as long as you don't go wild with the boost it should be fine, you could buy a lot of sound deadening with the money you would save - it would be easier than making adaptor plates etc to fit the Merc lump.
