Wow, amazing thread. I've just read a load of it in one go. What happened to the big old Bluebird? I saw the photos of it painted and being towed away - did you do anything with the interior? Fantastic skills - thanks for sharing! I repaired the vaneer rubbed it all down and re varnished it painted the roof and wired it also got it re upholstered it looks ok inside I do the interiors but they don't really float my boat so always try and get out of totally finishing them

There was also the even smaller Sprite 400. Didn't the 400 get renamed to Cadet? Or was it smaller than 10'? The 400 was no longer in the range when I worked with them. Maybe, A quick Google suggest there were two Cadets, a Cadet 10 and a Cadet 12. Perhaps the 400 became the Cadet 10? I'd never heard of a Cadet 12 - wasn't the Alpine 12' too? Seems strange to have two 12' models in the range back in those days.

Most of the stuff I've being up to lately has been fairly mundane not worth showing This is the begining of the winter crop of restorations there are about 4 of these due in It's a Viking Fibreline 1969 it came a couple weeks back for the chassis checking brakes ect and a skylight making and fitting This is the skylight I made for it

The a frame was very rotten indeed each side had a 6" lump missing out the top of the rail with a bit of 2" by 2" box welded in to the rust all a bit ropey The customer wanted an alko hitch putting on fare his summer holiday in it so we brought that forward Unfortunately it's not so simple to just bolt on a new hitch to a 45 year old peak chassis here's some issues The tube is too wide The hitch will foul the handbrake and jockey wheel and a frame cover So we decided to change the whole hitch incuding the bit that bolts to the a frame jockey wheel handbrake and all But the old hitch and a frame was 75 mm narrower than the new and it had a reverse lever the new depends on auto reverse back plates to work

I put a new wider a frame on it to suit the new hitch I made the old and new metric and imperial brake rods talk to each other by clever use of the old adjuster

I put the 2 straps on to carry the gas box and bottles the old a frame was rotted by the screws for this leaking in to the chassis rails for years so worst thing my straps will rot and not the a frame itself

As I said the old hitch had a reverse lever wich allows the brakes to be held off while reversing the caravan most caravans built before 1972 had this lever after that the auto reverse function was built in to the back plate of the brake drum and so alko ones are today I had to find auto reverse back plates bearings and hubs to fit the existing swinging arms kingpins and brake rod mechanisms What a curse word job lol

All was working as it should so I had to make it look fairly original The a frame cover was now too narrow too high and the holes were at the oposite sides to what they should be I cut the a frame cover in half made a jig to hold it all in the right place blanked the old holes the fireglassed it all up cut the jig away smoothed the old holes out with gob Then used the donor 2015 Stirling Eccles a frame cover to mark the holes in the right place on the 1969 a frame cover This is the result

I'm not doing a restoration on this it's going to be a freestyle type thing in the shape of a 30's caravan with some modern stuff it's going to have a solid fuel stove a fixed bed a toilet small seating area and some kind of very basic kitchen The chassis is mint it was built to last there is no rot at all the legs wind up and down the hitch works it was towed to my workshop Blasted
