This has some excellent content in it, these old vans are really quite stylish things. I'm a big fan of the overblown Vickers and curious to know if the blue (what little paint there is between the shiny bits) one got finished and if so, do we get to see pics of your workmanship on it?

I've only just stumbled upon this thread, and going to give it a good read through when I'm on a proper computer.
I bought an old caravan a while back to use as a tea hut down my yard, in the end I'd like to put it back to a useable caravan and use it correctly. I've not been able to find a great deal of detail on it, it's a Deanline Rambler.

I've never heard of them I just googled it looks to be an early eighties job In 1982 caravans international went tits up along with all the old brands after that some odd ball companies sprung up made a few caravans for a few years and then either got bought out or went bust this looks to be one of them In the early eighties construction changed too from the old coach building methods you can see in this thread with a timber frame being built on a solid ply wood floor steel chassis then being clad in aluminium to walls and floors being made of bonded foam 3mm ply and .4mm ally being hot bonded together in a machine with little to no timber frame basically so they can't be taken apart and repaired. The chassis became much flimsier pressed galvanised steel with no cross members at all and rubber indispension units on the axle as aposed to springs and dampers

These are cheap mass produced caravans They are poorly built but somhow the frames arent bad for rotting The intewrior wall board is oil trempured hardboard its good for not rotting but bad for warping this one had been shoddily repaired before but was full of warped interior walls Somehow i ended up rebuilding 75% of the thing

Your posts make it all look fairly straightforward, but how much time is usually involved in this sort of work? For all they look a fairly simple construction, I imagine that doing it DIY is somewhat more challenging and costs a fair amount of time. Until this thread I wasn't aware there were companies offering restoration of older caravans and a small mid-60s to late-70s 'van is an itch I'd like to scratch some day.

Then you're making it look too easy 300 hours is an awful lot of time and goes some way to explaining why the end products are looking so good.

That is a lot of hours! Well worth keeping the older ones on the road though.
When I looked into mine (which is more modern than I wanted really), I worked it out at about 1983, ish. At some point Deanline was A-Line, and I think it was bought out by Abi in the end.
It appears, as you say, to be cheap mass-produced stuff. It has some rear end damage, I think the chassis is okay, but the rear lower panel is dented in, and the knock caused the wall near the door to come away from the floor. This meant the door didn't shut correctly, and caused rot in some of the framework. I cut some rotten/broken material out, so the door closes, but will need to address this if it ever goes back to being a real caravan.
I was going to try and repair the frame from the inside, cutting the board out for access. Is it easier/better to take bits of the outer alloy skin off instead?
It's going military themed, so the repair doesn't have to be anywhere near the finish you produce!

This is the bedford ca ice cream van Its a bit of an unfinished job by another man he did a good job of the frame but then totally curse word the outer panels just by not knowing what he was up to I'm going to basically re skin the whole thing and re line it inside also put a floor in it I'm not too sure after that
