Today a foreign sounding gentleman rang about the Lada and said he wanted to buy it for the full price and would get a recovery guy to pick it up. He offered to put the money in my bank account to which I refused and said its a cash only sale
Normally this would be the point in which I'd put it down as being a scammer but - the guy said he'd sort out cash for the recovery driver to hand to me when he comes for the car. The phone number of the recovery guy checks out as being a recovery company in London, and the phone number of the buyer comes up with a car he tried selling in 2012.
If the recovery guy does turn up I'm thinking - maybe fake notes or some such.
Any ideas?

I really wouldn't worry. Bank transfer is safe and I've done it a few times.
Ladas are popular export so that could explain the accent. I sold a Chevrolet Lacetti to a Romanian guy a year or so back, he came in a recovery truck, gave me the full asking price then filled in the export section of the v5. He said he could get double what I sold it for back in Romania.

What kind of foreign?
I do this all the time and some people count my accent as foreign. I know you don't, but there are polish, Russian, Nigerian, etc guys doing the very same all over the UK (and Europe especially germany).
Bank transfers aren't safe when used by scammers. They money can be reverted when it's found out to have come from a dodgy, stolen, fraudulent or otherwise ropey account in scamland. If you're being sent cash it's all good. Make sure you have a mate pop round at the same time they do if it's any sizeable amount.
And... for why the lada sale? I missed this.

Here's what I can remember from the phone call - He's called Paul and he's from London, he has 10 RHD Lada's and might be taking them back to Hungary one day, but when he restores mine, he will drive to me and let me drive it. His accent, well that sounded more like a Gambian student I know.
Why am I selling the Lada? time, or should that be a lack of time. I'm never around to even start thinking of fixing the car(s)

I sold a car via Ebay last year - the winning bidder came and viewed it then arranged a recovery driver with cash. Again, it was for export and the recovery driver said he does loads of this work, all out through Tilbury dock. You're wise to be cautious and ask questions though, I certainly did. The only hard part was when the buyer asked for a discount on his winning bid! Er, no!

Was parked in car park of my local scrap yard the other morning in my VW Passat when a Polish guy just walked up and said how much for the car. Anyway got chatting and this guy tours the country buying up cars for export even knowing a few of my contacts who don't deal with scammers so first impressions can be deceptive

A few months back I sold, via flea bay, my Mitsubishi L200 pick up to a Bulgarian. He came down to Norfolk, by Train, from ABERDEEN, then drove it back after I picked him up at the station. I truly wish that all buyers were like him and not the f**k knuckles ive had to deal with in the past. Most East Europeans are seriously clued up, straight down the line and will carry a wodge of cash, like my buyer did when i told him i wasnt interested in a bank transfer, to put into your pudgy hands. Id deal with them like a shot any day of the week.

Thanks everyone, was just getting a bit worried, as I'm asking for more money than a LHD 2101 would cost him back in Europe. Will be checking each bill with one of those "fake note pens" just in case though

I sold a seat leon 20v turbo years ago on ebay as spares or repairs , it never ran right and nobody new anything about the engines then . Some dodgy sounding bloke bought it and asked if he could pick it up a midnight !!
I said no obviously which miffed him , then he asked if he could pick it up at 6 , so i said ok.
Massive longwheel base vw van turns up with trailer and about 6 guys , a stinking of vodka and looking welll shifty . They ahd a 30 second look then gave me the cash . Then the didnt want to fill out the logbook and i couldnt understand them . After a while with me crapping it that they were going to either just leave , stab me or give me a shanking they explained it was going to Lithuania in a few hours , hence why midnight as they were booked on the ferry .
All sorted out eventually , i suppose what would be a £3000 car here if its working would be a hell of a lot more there once they got it working .

Will be checking each bill with one of those "fake note pens" just in case though top kfw tip, tear each note across the dotted silver foil line, fakes tear, legit ones tear the paper but not the silver line Or just get the guy to go with you to a friendly petrol station, and use their note checker?

^ as per KFW I was in a local shop last week and they had a pretty good forgery pinned up by the cashdesk. They handed it over so I could check it, even the silver "ribbon" looked right but as KFW says - the silver line on the fake rips easy Unrelated - I sold a daily (motorbike) a few years ago. A couple of Polish guys turned up - no haggling - paid cash. They explained they had brought thier van over and were filling it with "cheap" UK bikes before heading back to the continent. No problems

I sold a clapped out old Vito van to two Romanian fellas. They could hardly speak English and communication was via facial expressions and hand signs. Gheorghe Hagi was mentioned. They handed the cash over, filled in the V5, they took the green part and they were gone in a puff of black smoke!
