As I have mentioned before I start a college course this September at South Devon College. I am going to study Vehicle Repair and Maintainance in Motorsport NVQ Level 3, so i've handed my notice in at Auto Trader where I am a souless sales rep I am sooooo happy to be going to do something I love and which will lead to me becoming a mechanic! Unfortunalty due to lack of funding for education if you are over 19 (I am 24) I have to get work when I am not at college. I applied to my local branch of Halfords, the idiot have only gone and given me a job. Whent for my interview today, which went really well and the guy said when can I start. I know it Halford, but its going to pay the bills (just) and at least you get a fairly decent staff discount.

I'm in the same situation. I go back to college in September to study something i love but it means staying in a crappy job to pay my bills. Ah well.

Congrats, sounds like a relaxed job. you can tell us of all hot deals n stuff now

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

As it happens I'd say well done! As an alternative to flipping burgers, putting cherries on frozen cakes or other traditional soulless student p/t jobs it's probably somewhat of a result!

Congratulations, a job is a job. But be very careful what you post up on the web...
If I was Halfords and read what you'd just written, you wouldn't even get past the door. You'd be surprised at just who reads this forum.

Thanks guys ;D As it happens I'd say well done! As an alternative to flipping burgers, putting cherries on frozen cakes or other traditional soulless student p/t jobs it's probably somewhat of a result! Totally it's the best thing I could hope for, the pays not that bad and the hours are flexible. It beats stacking shelves at Tesco and flipping burgers 100% Congratulations, a job is a job. But be very careful what you post up on the web... If I was Halfords and read what you'd just written, you wouldn't even get past the door. You'd be surprised at just who reads this forum. Thanks for the warning!

Sounds a dream job to me (as far as not-career stuff goes). You get a decent staff discount on bits and you can not be the typical idiot halfords employee.

cool. Now fill your toolbox with their Professional tools at staff rates and you are laughing.
Ditto what has been said about them on the forums. I know at least one other guy who has been bollacked for this he's said on forums which other Halford employees have snitched him up to management over. (recommending a brand of product to someone that Halfords don;t stiock, that sort of thing)

I worked for halfords for almost 3 years up until about 5 years ago now, Ive done worse jobs, just do as I did and let them realise you have a good knowledge of cars (I'm presuming you do) then get them to let you specialise on the parts counter, that way you don't have to bother with bikes air fresheners top boxes, blue LED's and all the other b0llocks they sell.
As has already been mentioned get discount on the Halfords Professional tools while you can as they really are incredibly good (about the only really good thing they sell) and with a lifetime waranty you cant go wrong, see it as an investment as they will last you for life.
