Hi finally I've gotten around to posting my latest project ! I knew nothing of beetles " all it needs is an mot " ..... what should have been said was " all it needs is everything for an mot " i decided to do a hotrod version as you you don't see many and I much prefer that look on a beetle, bought the car with this in mind only to find erm..... you can't do this with a super beetle - which I only realised it was when I started stripping it down about to strip it for parts my fellow car nut Macca encouraged me to take on the challenge. Below are images before and as and as it is at the moment - I'm currently stuck on a seized rear hub bolt for the brakes. After much much welding, fabrication, repairs .... so may repairs and some fun modifications this is where I am at ! I will post more images when I get beyond the brakes issue , I would appreciate what you think !

I think it looks like a baja bug / volksrod love child at the moment but it's getting there ! I'm thinking of a two tone paint job ( like cream bottom half and black top ) to make it more hotrod and less baja - any ideas would be most appreciated !

I like it! I always liked the look of the baja bug's with the inboard lights(mounted in the front hood) If it was possible I think that would go with your look. Or stretched rectangular led lights where you have them now

Thanks - I do like the baja but that not what I'm trying for with this beetle , Id like to achieve an old school hot rod look . Hopefully when I get the mudguards on it may look more hotrod than baja bug !

I looked at the photos for ages because something was bothering me about the 'look' of your car. I like it. But I feel that the white suspension pieces draw the eye and effectively ruin the 'lines' The chrome is fine as its expected. The white on the wheels is the same. Its only my opinion but you did ask

Its only my opinion but you did ask That's a really interesting point - thanks for your thoughts on it , because it's a super beetle the front suspension is the main problem for doing the folks rod look - as the springs are so visible I cleaned everything up and used chrome spray on the springs to make them a feature but I guess in doing so this spoils the lines of the car and makes it look higher than it is - perhaps I should get some black springs and this mighty fix the look. I think this also makes it look like a baja beetle as the coil springs are too Morden for the hot rod look too . Please keep the tips coming !! I'm also planning on doing the wheels black with white walls but this will be after the re spray

A refreshing change to the normal choice of car on here. I like it.
With regard to suspension, if hidden keep it dark, if exposed make a feature of it but colour choice is pivitable to the overall look, IMO.
With a car that already stands out, giving the police an excuse to pull you over is not a good idea - the reg plates are illegal :-)

I fully agree with the police comment ! The car is actually 1973- the reg is wrong and the dvla have told me I have to pay 25 quid to rectify THIER mistake !!! So yes the plate is illegal down to the fact it's a newer plate on an older car my main concernes was was for the lack of wheel arches - I have made some that attach to the hubs so are independent with the wheels and not attached to the body , even so I'm sure the police will find something to moan at me for lol the wheel arches for the back are mudguards from a trike - funny thing is police stopped outside my house looking at my car and my mates and I asked them what the law was and they said they would not stop me for no mud guards !!! But then again that's one copper that's not a jobsworth i think ill I'll try photoshopping the beetle and see what you guys think of the ideas I have for it finished - really appreciate the comments guys !

The plates are illegal because you can have silver/white on black only up to L reg and only if the car was first registered before 1st January 1973, so you have to decide whether you want the potential agro in exhange for the better look of the old style plates:-)

so the images are showing the springs in black ( chrome now ) , a visor ( I think ill need to make from ali ) and the mudguards . The reason for the two colour paint is to try and take it away from a baja bug look - plus ive never done one like that - I always do black cars . I think once I get the car re registered it will be ok for the plates - its been on the road for a long time before I had it registered 1978 with those plates and it will be 1973 when re registered - it would take a real saddo copper with time on his hands to give me a hard time about the number plates
