That looks familiar. Do you know the history of it ? Did a chap in Cirencester (Andrew ?) used to have it ?

Yes. That was me. I bought it back from the man I sold it to in Ireland in 2008. I paid what I sold it to him for at the time, which was nice. £500.

So far the front slam panel looks very crusty as do the wings. The inner winghs look entirely solid. Will have to see about the subframe once the engine is out.

goodness , not seen a 104 for years! used to hack about with a cousin in his back in about '86...sounded like a bag of spanners being dropped down a fire escape but took epic amounts of abuse!!

More updates from the car. Rear bumper came off easier than I thought. Managed to pull the bumper sideways enough to pull the sheared bolts through the mounting brackets. And off Set about removing the seats as well. Starting to look more like a shell now. Still quite a lot to remove though. October is going to be engine time so hope to get all the insides of the shell out by then. Fuuuuuhhh!! more fuuuhhhh! and agin!

Never seen one of these - looks good from here. I think I would find a different dash if it was mine.

This is nostalgia for me. My Mum had a red 104 nearly new in 1981. It was rare then - never saw another one. I mostly remember Sunday mornings through the 80s trundling over to visit my Mum's parents in Shepherds Bush in it. It got resprayed by a mate of my Dad around 1989 then I'd just got my licence and gave it a good thrashing on the M69 near Cov - got it up to almost 90mph. That's what young twerps do when showing off to their girlfriend .
It wasn't used to such activity and started showing head gasket symptoms. I denied all responsibility. I wanted to fix it as I was just getting into spanners but it disappeared overnight somewhere as my Mum had a horror of al fresco mechanics/cars on bricks.
This is first one I've seen since then. Best of luck with it

Mini update. Had a busy few weeks so not managed to get down to the barn to look at the car so today I decided to shoehorn a couple of hours in. Managed to get the steering column out and after that the centre console and the entire dash and clocks assembly. As has become a habit the removal of the dash revealed more lovely rusty stuff. Getting rid of it all is going to be a challenge. The wiring under the dash looks foreboding to, Obviously nothing like a modern car but it's unfamiliar territory and it looks very much like the definition of something that is going to be much easier to pull out than put back in! If anyone wants to offer any advice on the best method of removing all the rust from what is going to eventually be a bare shell?

By far the best way to remove all the rust is to dip the shell. The problem is that it removes all the rust and if there's more rust than good metal ...

A fair bit of internet debate (always helpful) on the pros and cons of this vs some kind of blasting. Depends on what you mean by pricy I suppose. Based on the prices I've been quoted in the past, dipping is more costly than blasting (maybe 30-40%) but will give you a much cleaner finished product and gets into all the internal crevices which blasting doesn't. The cost relative to the rest of a major build is fairly small. I seriously considered dipping the shell of my last build but didn't have the balls to do it (wasn't sure how much of it I'd get back). 5 years down the road I kind of wish I'd done it.
