I haven't seen an early Uno for absolutely years, let alone an i.e. Turbot. The dreaded tin-worm must have devoured a lot of them. I really like them, even though I have an inherent fear of anything Italian or French! ;D

There's a mk2 on the island I always seem to see at Tesco's petrol station that has me drooling everytime. Owner seems like a bit of a scallie though...

Please do! Sounds smart. I reckon that any hot hatch will be getting rare in standard form.

I'm with you on this Robin, there used to be loads of them about. One of the local ones was running a proven and reliable 223bhp and he reckoned there was more to go if he changed from the Mk1 1.3 lump to the Mk2 1.4. I remember when he took it off the road for 'a quick tidy up' and discovered that behind the plastic trims the bottom 6" of it had rotted away! Practically the only thing that was holding the body onto the floor was the bulkhead! I think most of them rotted like that, Fiat rustproofing being what it was. And a fair few of them got stuffed when they were popular. I know where there's one laid up in Paignton, but the last time I had a look round it I remember thinking that it would only be any good as a running gear donor. Reliability issues with Italian motors? ;D

Oh man, that brings back some memories. A guy I used to work with in Aberdeen maybe 6 0r 7 years ago had an absolutely MINT white one. I mean this thing was immaculate. I remember when it sprouted a tiny bit of rust under the side repeater. Anyone else would have ignored it or put a rust-killing product on it and maybe fitted oval side repeaters to cover it, not him, he had a bodyshop replace the wing, then when he got it back, reckoned they hadnt used enough seam sealer in the joint under the wing so got them to take it all off and do it again till he was happy. A few mods, it was lowered on a decent kit, upgraded brakes and braided lines all round. Engine-wise was standard.
I remember some thug flung a beer-bottle through the rear window in a petrol station. He had a serious job getting that sorted as the glass is bonded in and a structural part of the tailgate iirc, which is unique to the turbo version. Last I heard, he took it to uni with him down south and it got vandalised. I think he lost interest after that.
Shame, as it would be a good car to own as it never ever wanted for any maintenance.

Yeah I remember a few ones with over 200bhp knocking around once apon a time, but I guess they have been thrashed, crashed or just corroded away The one I saw was in Teignmouth. Didn't look too bad really, it was missing one of the side skirts but the rest of it look good. I went to Western Wheels 2 years ago and there was a Uno Turbo owners club there they had a good 15-20 car on the stand. Even based model Uno are low on the ground, mk1's must be nearing extinction?

Nice. As you say, a bit steep considering the work needed but you don't see many now.

I was at college with a guy who had a ph2 Turbot, absolutely flew. Unfortunately, too many have been written off or claimed by the tinworm. It says a lot that my 205 GTI felt like a W123 Mercedes in build terms compared to his Uno! They were beasts even in standard form. I remember reading that FIAT actually detuned them massively for production as they could easily have rolled them out with 50% more power.
Also remember a blue bodykitted one that used to live near my parents place in North London, I'm sure it was in Max Power or something around 10 years ago.

Buy a Mk1 - I love the Uno Turbo. A mate had a mk1 with a mk2 1400 turb engine - it had been fettled with - but went like the absolute clappers. Period Compos for the win!
The clueless look at it as a chav boy racer car, but stick the middle finger up at people who have that opinion!
There is an MSN Uno Turbo group called Turbo Collective - it might be worth joining...
