Is it a waste of money on a car that can only have the front wheels adjusted for tracking, it's a 4x4 with a rear live axle.
I'm guessing that the worn on the edge front tyres happened because the tyre pressure was wrong for a long time, the tracking is out or the bushes are shot and the only one of the 3 I can't check myself, is the tracking!
Opinions please?

Most places these days do a free check and charge you for each adjustment they need to/can make, E.g. camber, toe etc.
They'll tell you what the rear tracking is doing, which could highlight worn bushes etc anyway, but without adjusting anything they shouldn't charge you for that bit if they're charging you for adjustments on the front.

The 4 wheel alignment should at least tell you whether the rear axle is at right angles to the axis of the car......
That assumes you can find an alignment centre with someone that actually knows how to drive the machine!

Live rear axle, whats the front axle? Solid or wishbones? Although the rear is not adjustable, a 4 wheel alignment will confirm or otherwise that all is well front and rear. If the rear axle is out of line then there may be issues with chassis or mounting points that a front tracking will never show. Front camber and caster are also adjustable on some 4x4s.

Hi, Outside edge can be one of two causes, one is that there's excessive toe in. The other is if you have power steering it means you can turn faster into a corner than the tyres would be happy with and so they scrub off on the outside edge. A quick and dirty check is to park the vehicle on flat level ground with the wheels straight ahead, then stand about 2 or 3 vehicle lengths behind and look down each side of the vehicle and compare the front wheels with the rear ones and see if the toe in looks excessive. If your not sure try it with some other cars and you will soon get an idea of what to look for. Colin

Even with a live rear axle it is worth having 4 wheel alignment ; The thurst line can be accounted for this way, and result in potentially straighter driving car.
As for the excessive tyre wear I'd say excessive toe in. I'm not the kindest of people around roundabouts but I generally don't tend to kill the outside of the tyres first if they are inflated correctly, but then everyone does drive a little different.

I've had no end of problems recently getting my cars aligned. 3 blokes scratched their heads over the tracking on my Discovery the other day before a fourth stepped in to show them what to do. Safe to say i'm not going back there again.

If you Midlandslers want a place to go try Ross at BT Tyres in Rugby. He is alot cheaper than many places with a Hunter machine. He however possesses a good understanding of vehicle geometry and what affects what. He's even re-geo'd a few cars that have been on a Hunter machine in a place very close to him. In my case he re-tracked the Dolly Sprint after a classic car specialist who dealt with E-Types somehow managed to get the toe-out off the end of the scale! I know adam73bgt has used him for a separate reason with success as well. I used to go to other places near me out of convenience. Unless the car is slammed (i.e, the wheels are tucked) I always go to him now and have never had a problem or had to get it re-aligned. The only other place I'd go to is Spire Technologies in Leamington Spa in the Midlands. Cheap however he is not but he can make a car handle how you want it to ; if you want more turn in he can do that and explain what the pros and cons will be depending on the car in question. andrewbaran , where did you go? You can PM me if you wish.

It's a Delica and the O/S front tyre had worn on the inside edge, while the N/S was worn on the outside edge.
The new, larger wheels have very good Bridgestones on them, so I need to get this checked!

Some cars like the Clio 172 have alot of toe which can improve the handling but it can also be at the expense of tyre wear.

I've used Hawleys tyres in Killamarsh, South Yorkshire for the OHs Lexus, after getting the run around from lots of places they were really good and had really sensible prices. It was interesting to watch too with the machine telling the operator what to do with the ramp between adjustments.
