Well this is just lovely I'd never seen one before either... Edelweiss Customs appear to mainly do bike work, but when they do cars they seem to turn out total winners : www.edelweisscustoms.com/You will be amazed at some the of earlier cars and the styling that came out of the budget market vehicle manufactures especially in the soviet bloc - for further inspiration check out Skodas own museum - museum.skoda-auto.com/ - well worth the effort should you be over in that part of the world - some of their early stuff is really not what you would expect from what became a low budget producer of vehicles until VAG took over.

The reason I found that Jag was because I was looking for other similarly styled cars (I know it isn't even a remotely exact match, but that side detailing made the connection in my head), I'm guessing you may know of more

Wanted to find std pic for comparison as I wondered it they'd radically customized a sedan, but looks a fairly std body. & rare sport cabrio. Great steering wheel.

The great thing about this is unless you know the car to start with it's hard to tell how much or little custom work has been done. It's basically standard except for the lowering job but looks like a full custom. I find it curious that East Germany in the depths of the cold war would have designed such an American looking car, but then again other communist countries were doing the same. Russia's GAZ Chaika, as used by top party bods, was clearly a rip off of a 50s Packard- Though later models seem to owe more to the MK4 Zephyr- (with a pinch of Lincoln Continental)

That is really quite lovely.
All subsequent cars in theis thread would also look just as brilliant with the same treatment. I.e. standard body, painted, detailed, dropped. And whitewalls.

I think the change in shape of the split from white to yellow at the front end, below the chrome strip does it a world of favours to make it look a bit sleeker, and not having any white at the top of the door, below the glass, tidys it up nicey. Lovely job, and lovely shape to start with

The models became considerably less glamourous as the years rolled by and later cars gained a brutalist charm all their own. The later model Gaz above puts me more in mind of a Peugeot 604 (another Cold War era design gem) than it does the Mk4 Zephyr or Continental.

I looked at the title 'lovely' & 'Wartburg' and thought now there's an oxymoron, but that's pretty cool!

Yeah. Super cool. I thought it an interesting custom decision to have the kick of the side trim at the edge of the door. But then it seems that is factory!

I remember seeing one of the cabrios, post box red, with four lads hacking round the middle of East Berlin, back in the mid 1980's before the Wall fell. I think it was the only time I saw one before the end of the GDR.
A mate suggested buying one of the estates a few years later. It looked OK but those side windows were yellowing perspex and were probably more expensive than the car was worth. Another missed opportunity.
