Absolutely tragic, tragic news. I saw Colin compete many, many times and he was one of, if not THE best British rally driver ever. raw talent, commitment and always, always spectacular. I am stunned beyond words.
RIP Colin, you will be sorely missed.

That's brought me back down to earth.
He's been my idol since I can remember as he won the championship the year I really got into cars (I was 4!). He's the reason we've owned two Subaru's! I met him once and he was a really, genuinely decent guy.

Yes, members of his family were also killed if I remember correctly. The legend that was. Had his cars prepped by Sydney Meeke in the next valley to my house y'arr. His son and daughter were on board, and the pilot and a journo/cameraman iirc. at least 5 years ago now, possibly 2000 actually.

Steve Hislop the bike racer went the same way a few years back too.
My mate has a restored Yamaha LC250 with his (Steve Hislops) name still on the document listed as a previous keeper too.

McRae was the primary reason for the resurgence (lately) of rallysport in North America.
His appearance at the 2006 X-Games against Pastrana did more than anyone could guess to put Rally on the sports map here. The roll-over finish at the end of the stadium stage only cost him an estimated .5 sec. He lost the overall win by less than that! It was unreal, completely and totally unreal. The networks went nuts running the tape for a week afterwards.
Now he is among the immortals. Godspeed, Sir Colin.

Cannot believe that legend is gone. Didn't an irish driver die in a chopper crash a couple of years back? Bertie Fisher? Yeah, that was bertie fisher, it was just up the road from my house - i was actually out tonight with his nephew - he couldn't believe the circumstances of the McCrae incident. God love them all

A real waste of huge talent, I can't believe this has happened. Anyone who counts this: as part of their daily working life is a true hero in my book. What I also admired is that when he wasn't out there driving, he just got on with his life quietly.

Really sad to hear this, Colin along with Richard Burns and Roger Clark, were my idols and the reason why to this day, i choose rallying over any other motorsports.
RIP Colin Mcrae

Though my view is also that we should celebrate his life and remember him like the pic here does. RIP Colin.

Poor bloke. An idol of mine and no doubt any petrolhead.
I'm absolutlely gutted to hear about this. Only consolation is that it sounds it it would have been all over very quickly for the occupants of the helicopter.
