Does any one have any experience with these, its a 2002 model and has lost drive with no warning or nasty noises on the motorway, apparently juddered a couple of times like bad fuel then went slower and slower. Fluid in box seems at normal level, no bad smells or warning lights on the dash. Park is holding so the lever is moving things.

I can't help, but I've always liked the idea of these. A worthy purchase for a daily (other than the 'box)?

I can't help, but I've always liked the idea of these. A worthy purchase for a daily (other than the 'box)? Yep this one is on lpg so relatively cheap to run, pretty much like a high speed sofa. We have put 60k on this one and other than servicing this has been the only major issue. It's going to be for sale as spares I think shortly as my wife has lost confidence in it and doesn't want to drive it unless it's a really simple fix.

Did you check the atf level with it running? We've had a few RX in at work, and the metal pipe work for the oil cooler behind the front bumper rots out and allows the fluid to weep out over time without leaving a noticeable oil spill

Don't know if you've sorted it or not but, a few things - Drop the box sump and check the filter, I bet that's blocked up. Providing you haven't driven too far with no fluid then change it, flush the box with the correct grade of trans oil (Dex III or Toyota type 4, if its Type 4 there will be IV embossed on the auto box drain plug. I suspect with it being an 02 it will be type 4)
Check the box level on a flat surface with the engine running, very important point.

These U140E/F boxes are prone to premature failure. From memory they're very similar/the same as certain Rav4 boxes and also Caldinas, however Caldinas have different internals so are more robust (slightly).
It's unusual not to have any warning signs like whining, hesitation or certain gears not engaging effectively but it does happen, my 300zx just lost drive unexpectedly when I came out for work one morning, which was boring...
Toyota usually make strong reliable auto boxes but for some reason they went slightly wrong with the u140.
Hopefully I'm wrong but I think you'll be looking at replacement as a rebuild will be probably be un-economical.
With the lack of tuning circles attached to these cars I'm not sure if you can upgrade gears/clutch packs to prevent failure in the future either.

Thanks for the reply, that's what my reading led me to believe which was quite surprising as people were reporting problems at very low miles where this one has 230k on it! I found a good used box but it was £400 add on the time to fit it and it just wasn't worth it. It's gone for export now it sold instantly, we've bought a ford Maverick/ Escape as a replacement. Can't believe how many enquiries we had for the Lexus though...

Not surprised it sold quickly they are good cars and the engines are fairly well sought after in the MR2 scene. I used the rx300 engine in my mr2 as they are a very good comprimise of easy to install but plenty of power. Having read this explains why i managed to sell the gearbox out of it so quickly.
