To those with stretched tyres: What are they like in the wet? Slippy slidey? Fairly normal? Woefully dangerous? I know the dubbers run 'em all year, but they do silly things like lower MkII Golfs and make them handle like poo

Umm, did you guys read the thread..?
I wanted to know what stretched rubber was like to use.
It does look silly, especially the Saxo.

Chandler's stretch is awesome ... not sure I'd run it,.. but it worked for him on that car I've noticed no real difference on the B310,.. but then my contact patch with the road has increased over the standard try size because the wheels are so much wider

What about cornering? And what wheel/tyre combo have you got? Any difference in the wet?

over streching will be dangerous, but it also matters about driving. Ragging it round could pop the tyre off compared to normal driving

when we raced toy cars with foam tyres we would radius the edges of the tyres to make them break away more gradually and more controllably. - Is this why drifters do it? Ultimate grip was slightly less but there was no snap break away.

yeah like the bloke at RR thats lost his rear end ;D
stretch like that up there is ridiculous, it all depends on how you are gonna be driving. and how much stretch you are gonna be doing

From what I've heard stretching the tyres makes them snatchier (ie they'll let go quicker), but tbh it's going to be up to the tyre type and construction as much as the stretching. Some tyres react badly to stretching, some don't really change their characteristics.

I don't think I'd run the same stretch as on that Saxo - but I think it looks awesome!

Ultimate grip was slightly less but there was no snap break away. I think that's down to reducing the contact patch. For pneumatic tyres the stretched sidewall is stiffer, and therefore has less give and will break away more quickly.

Just a thought. Anyone ever stretched crossplies? I thought crossplies naturally 'narrowed' when off the rim and had to forced on to the bead? *n

Ha you bunch of pussies! you should be banned for being so bloody grumpy Stretching will give the tyres less flex. The tyre will give less grip but the loss of grip will be much more progressive and predictible than a 'squashed' tyre which will tend to grip and grip and then just lose grip all at once. If i was after maximum grip id run the tyres with a small amount of stretch as a bit of a comprimise (like a 175/50 on a 7") but on the road i can hardly see it making a huge differance. I run streatched tyres and don't have problems with grip on the wet. Why does it matter if your car has slightly less grip than if you wheels were 1" narrower?? i mean it will still grip better then the 135/80s you started out with. My expericance comes from kart and circuit racing where we would strech the tyres on to a wider rim in hot weather and would allways put the wets on a narrower rim where possible. Athough that was more to do with heat which is less important in a road tyre its still relevent.

mine on my volvo are fine in the dry maybe a bit worse than the std combo but with better responce.. in the wet however they are very slidy... not dangerous id say but you have to be "more on the ball" sideways is easy... ;D si
