Got a chance to spend a bit of time on the pinto this afternoon. However, annoying I dropped one of the pistons on the garage floor and dented it   Is this one of those “if it’s not perfect, replace it” times or would it be ok if I filed it down (assuming there is no other damage) The piston still moves freely in the bore... I was having a nice time until that point  |

Are you trying to build a massive power engine? If if was me, I’d clean if off ( carefully) probably with a bit of fine wet n dry, or emery, make sure you’ve got ALL the abrasive off, oil well & refit
However I don’t build race engines, just road stuff
Any damage to rings or grooves?

Nope, not massive power...mild road. Plan is just clean, check, new gaskets, etc...
The rings seems ok (although i was to replace them anyway). It only seems to be top edge that got caught.

Hi, Pistons operate in a hostile environment and so are quite resilient, so just dress it up and carry on. How's the floor?

Just clean it off carefully, as long as the rings are free in the grooves that isn't an issue.
There's a fair amount of blow by looking at the marks on the piston, might be worth checking the bores for ovality as well as wear.

Once everything is cleaned up, it seems to be a case of measuring and checking the condition of EVERYTHING. |

Smooth it out with a jewellers file and some fine Emery paper and it'll be fine.
