Yeah, I know it's been a while since I've been on this forum. It's been far too long since I've been in the UK either. Damn you COVID.
But anyway. I'm going on a holiday in Australia in January 2023. Instead of renting a car, I want to buy one, drive it for 3weeks and then ship it to the Netherlands.
I've done some research on REGO, pink slips and insurance, but I can't find anything on how much time it'll take to register the car.
Is it 'buy in the morning, drive in the evening', or does it take a couple of days before the paperwork is processed?
I hope to hear from someone with experience or perhaps somebody who is living in Australia and is willing to help me out.
Thanks in advance!

I've seen a bunch of people overhauling a complete wreck in 60 minutes on TV, so why can't I do it in 3 weeks?

Probably help if you mention which state, pretty sure it varies a fair bit by state. Nick

You used to go into the office on the relevant state and do the transfer. It's been years so you can probably do it on line now Different states have different rules regarding roadworthyness and annual testing. WA and SA didn't used to have any form of roadworthyness check before registration.

It's in New South Wales. Should've mentioned that.
I thought that you could register the car online only in Western Australia.

Checking insurance costs might be an idea first - everywhere I've had the same crazy idea, the cost of insurance, having no insurance history in that country, has been eye-wateringly expensive!

Is it coming from a mate? It would be simpler to leave it registered to them for the time you are there. Historic Rego might be the way to go for what you want of the car is eligible - no idea what the criteria is in NSW though Pick up me a Valiant whilst you are over there please, with a hardtop or a charger will do Also Australia is a bloody big place, 3 weeks isn't really long enough to get over the key lag and look around, plus I think they still have border controls in place.

There are insurance companies who insure cars for backpackers. That will cost around 50 AUD per month. The mandatory insurance comes with the green slip (REGO). I know Australia is quite a large country. But this time we'll be going mainly for Summernats. And then whilst being there, have a little roadtrip to the Bathurst motor museum, mount panorama and getting a glimpse of the Targa Tasmanië route. It's all just down the road!

Regarding shipping you can do RoRo or container, if you are doing something nice or desirable beware going RoRo as the wharfies aren't exactly keen on their motoring heritage leaving the country and have been known to play about with stuff - the plug leads got swapped round on the Kingswood I had!

Would love a VN Commodore or a BA falcon. But it's just what I come up with. As long as it's Australian made.

QLD is probably the easiest for rego. Our RWC is pretty lax, and once you've got one, as long as you keep it paid on time, you never need another! Pretty sure all other states require a check every year like a MoT. Rego renewals can be done online, but owner transfer and new rego will need to be done in person at the Transport Department. Owner transfer comes with a set fee to keep Karen in a job, plus a percentage of the total sale cost of the car, so get your friend to sell it to you for a smaller amount on paper if you can. Rego for a 6 or 8 cylinder car is about $980 a year in QLD. You can do half years, and I think they've broken it down to quarterly now too. If you're buying a registered car they will need to provide a roadworthy as part of the transfer, which somewhat removes the issue that cars never get checked over here.
Couldn't really answer on insurance as I've never had to check for that sort of situation, but you could probably see what you're in for just filling in the estimate forms on Suncorp, RACQ, AAMI, etc.
Can't really answer for other states, but sounds like you'll be mostly stuck in NSW anyway.
FYI, registered and insured in any state will allow you to drive wherever, in case you were wondering.
I know of a yellow BA XR6 turbo sedan that's about to be re-registered, but I'm not sure if the plan is to drive it for a while, and I think the previous owner has first buy back rights.
Personally I don't think he'll drive it much, as his mildly modded FG G6ET is way more fun haha.

yeah, I'm stuck in NSW for buying and registering. But I'm still not sure how long it will take to complete the paperwork. Can I buy in the morning, go to the MRO to register the car and then drive the car in the afternoon?
And carwhise.... Toyota Lexcen would be awesome. :mr:

Yeah, as long as you have proof of payment etc from the transport department you should be ok.
It usually takes at least a week for everything to come in the mail.

Be aware in NSW you also have to pay a percentage of whatever the car cost to RMT within 2 weeks of buying it.
Pretty sure in WA the car needs an inspection when you buy it but nothing else after that if you keep it registered.

NSW might by the problem - they are a bunch of absolute curse words. I bought a car in QLD when I first arrived - dealership did all the paperwork and I drove it away a couple of days later once the money was cleared. A couple of days later I went in to swap my UK license for a QLD one - when they put my details in I already had a number in their system - they'd set it up when the car was registered to me. The lady actually asked if I'd had a speeding fine! Getting it registered without a NSW License, or a NSW address might be tricky. I needed a Stat Dec from my father in law to say I was staying at his QLD address to get my license swapped for example. Having said that there must be a way of doing it, although most backpackers seem to use WA or QLD rego'd cars, maybe because their rules are a bit slacker. Good luck and get a Holden
