hello Guys ive always had a hankering for all things 6x6 or even 8x8 and recently i saw a picture of a 6 wheel sj pickup which fired my enthusiasm, would there be the apatite for a biuld thread and a discussion on how to arrange the drive train, I'm not a lover of leaf springs so coils it would have to be in the form of a suzuki jimny chassis with a 3rd axle added on the back, i will try to attach a picture but I'm not that computer savy

I'm in!
Geometry-wise, might be worth checking some of the RC forums

No, radio control
I'll have a look see what I can find. IIRC The easiest way to do it was four front wheels all steering, two axles at the back means lots of low speed scrubbing

i'd bet a shilling that was a 6x4. wheels so close together would make it impractical for passing drive between rear axles and retaining any kind of articulation/travel. (unless it was a walking beam, hmmm, hello)

hi walking beam ? is that where both back axles can pivot about on their own subframe ?
thanks for the youtube links sort of like that but a bit neater, i don't see 6x6 as better of road than 4x4 by nature they are bigger and less nimble but they do carry more weight and judging from the 6 wheel land rover and range rover i have had they ride so much smoother over bumpy terrain i will be using suzuki jimny suspension all round its easy to adapt and well proven being the same as range rover classic front but at the rear as well same as g wagon and toyota land cruiser as well

like that but with a bit more chassis grated on the rear to hold the 3rd axle

Was just overtaken by a 6 wheel land rover pickup. He had his rear axle lifted off the road, like you see lorries do when unladen to minimise tyres scrubbing and wear.
Are through axle drive conversions possible with the Suzuki?

Hi yes entirely possible to have a drive through suzuki axle its just a live axle like a classic range rover so you can cut the rear pan off and mount a rear facing diff with out too much trouble but i don't think I'm going that route it looks fairly easy to convert the suzuki vitara transfer box to have one forward facing output and 2 rear facing outputs that way i have the choice of driving any or all axles

The 2 diffs in one axle arrangement is possible, but provides very poor strength, as all the torque from both axles goes through one CROWN wheel This arrangement is more common on landrovers, but a bit spendy, and I am not sure it is still available: I have also seen an arrangement were a second transferbox was driven from the PTO output of the first, and driving the second axle through this. Out of interest, why a 6wd suzuki? Or is it because you can? Daan

Daan Hi yes i had a 110 with that sort of arrangement on it but as you say its pretty spendy and there is the unsprung weight issue maybe its not that a big an addition to a lr axle but i can put a suzuki axle over my shoulder and walk up stairs adding that big chunk of engineering is much bigger percentage on a suzuki axle, and why suzuki well yes because i can lol i have 2 jimnys here doing nothing its always easier to use what youve got and i have big 6x6's so something at the other end of the scale will make a change , chassis number 1 has gone off to the shot blasters will start a build thread upon its return thanks Andy

Have a look at Scammell Pioneer/ Explorer for walking beams. Basically a single fixed axle with a chain or gear driven "beam" on each end driving the pair of wheels on that side.

Enables very good axle articulation they've to one another when going over ridges etc.

Hi
Yes I have some big ex military trucks I have offroaded and they have this type of arrangement and the articulation is quite surprising, when you look at the size and number of leaf springs you would think no chance of any articulation but they sure do have some wheel travel
