Hey Folks! Another week, another weekly chat, your place for stuff that may not warrant a full thread or stuff that is just going on right now that you want to share. Happy New Year everyone, hope that 2024 is great and brings joy to you all. We're starting the year on the back foot still, the issue with Proboards hasn't been resolved. I'm keeping in touch with them and hopeful we'll have a resolution soon, they apparently know what the problem is. Here is hoping we get it fixed up soon. In the mean time nothing is being lost when posting, so that is good, although the people having issues logging in is really becoming vexing. I think the way most likely to work is using forum.retro-rides.org ... in fact no one should be using the old retrorides.proboards.com address for anything. Outside of the forum stuff January is going to be an absolutely manic month for sorting out show things, but once it is done it should all go pretty smoothly from then on out. Year wise I've got a whole load planned, both for here, Club RR and car stuff in general. Who knows maybe I'll get behind the wheel of my Datsun again at some point. . Who knows maybe I'll get behind the wheel of my Datsun again at some point. Fingers crossed! Happy New Year everyone! Spent the morning at a local classic car meet with my Brother. Some lovely stuff there, a couple of highlights were this ex-Police Omega, which was featured heavily in "Road Wars" on the telly and in Grand Theft Auto apparently: And this: If you know about Imps you might know about the owner, Shrigley Engineering. Great Youtube channel! www.youtube.com/@thehillmanator

Nothing much doing at the moment. Family stuff. Y'all know how that goes. Trying to use what little "down time" I seem to have right now to clear the decks to get some stuff actually done this rear rather than just tripping over "stuff" every where....

Happy New Year to all. I am hoping this year is better than last year. I was diagnosed with throat cancer in the latter months of last year so the year was never going to end as my best year ever. While the cancer is quite advanced it is still localised luckily.
This year has been the strangest new years day ever.
Went for my first session of radiotherapy today. Got another 29 sessions over the next 6 weeks along with 6 sessions of chemotherapy. I know the effects and side effects of the treatment are going to be hard going & I have been told to get a hobby that is as immersive as possible & to set myself a reward for when the cancer is beaten. They suggested a holiday as the reward but I told them I had already decided on my reward for when the cancer is beaten.
Immersive hobby is easy as still enjoying making stuff with the 3D printer.
As for my reward to myself we were looking at getting EV as the family run around but after all this I have decided that I want another Mercedes. Preferably 1990-2010 era & hopefully a V8. Not worried if its not a AMG as a V8 E class is still a quick -ish car but a AMG E55k would be nice.
Effects/side effects could last for quite some months after treatment ends so got plenty of time to save for my reward.

Best of luck Laters , both with the treatment and with the car search. I am unsure of what this next year is going to bring, as far as vehicle projects are concerned. I am slowly processing the mental steps to rid myself of all the excess projects that are just weighing me down. Two bikes have gone, I have negotiated the sale of a complete bike engine and some spares that should happen on Thursday, and I have a mate of a mate that might be interested in taking on the Austin project... Paperwork has returnd for another Bantam, this time without typos, so I can start thinking about stripping that down and getting the parts listed up on ebay. There's no immediate rush on that, as I know most people are not going to be buying until next month at the earliest, but it's something that can be started on in small chunks. I have a load of other stuff to work through and get onto ebay, and working through my various sheds and suchlike looking through their contents with a view to "can that stay, or should it go?" has been quite a revalation in terms of the realisation of how much mental weight I have been unconsciously carrying in "get around to it" projects. Ensuite bathroom project is actually really starting to show progress after literally years of stops and starts. Plasterer has been and gone early December, so well into second fix now. Have sealed/primed the plaster now it's had time to cure fully, and the ceiling has had its final coats and I fitted the light unit yesterday; so I can finally get rid of the temporary lighting in there and have less leads running around the floor. Next job is to paint the walls, then make a start on the architrave and skirting. Targets for the yesr are, not necessarily in order: Finish bathroom and adjacent bedroom. Insulate and floor loft. Repair conservatory. Get Canta roadworthy. I have also made the decision that, if the Austin goes, and the Canta proves to be unsuitable for what I want it for, then I am going to find the best Trabant Kombi I can afford.

Laters , all I can say is I understand & wish you heartfelt good wishes with ye health. Tis funny how we fobbed off the old folk when they went on & on about how important one's health is. Like others, the ongoing mental pressure is something I need to balance very carefully especially after starting Auto Distraction & becoming a partner in a new but small business. I'm hoping they will bring much motivation and an element of excitement to the new year. My poor Chevy had very little work done to it last year hence me doing a poor show with it's build thread but fingers crossed I get spare time to crack on!

Hoping this year is much more positive for you Laters plus that era of V8 Mercedes seem to be quite overlooked at the moment so hopefully you should be able to get yourself a very nice reward when the time comes 👍 I don't really do new years resolutions per se, but I've decided to try and use this year to tackle a long standing issue I have with procrastination by doing at least one thing on one of my cars or bikes every day for the whole year. Even if it's a tiny job, it should help me keep the momentum going. Made good progress with the bike over Christmas and new years so hopefully have that rideable for spring 🤞

First up wiper on the Porsche, which have needed changing for about 8 months now.

I'll see how I go with it, the danger could be that I start delaying doing a few jobs in one go to make sure I have something to do the next day, which would rather defeat the purpose 😂

Happy New Year to all. I am hoping this year is better than last year. I was diagnosed with throat cancer in the latter months of last year so the year was never going to end as my best year ever. While the cancer is quite advanced it is still localised luckily. My sister had throat cancer and the surgery went well. She did have to have more surgery but she's getting through it now I do hope you can keep smiling through the treatment as it can be debilitating. My Wife has had cancer and 15 years later is still here to tell the tale, so there are some good success stories. Rhod Gilbert the comedian did a TV programme following his cancer treatment and how he coped with it, it's an excellent programme and worth a watch

I had an awful, awful year on every front, from an ideal house purchase getting very messy and being mucked around with that, my mum being dragged through court for something she didn't do (as my dad was 20 years ago as well), my (sadly alcohol-dependent) ex turning up mid-year looking like she'd straightened her life up and just as I started to get sucked back in the same problem reared its head again, and staffing issues at work. Never got near any cars except the Camaro which broke down the night before I was to take it on holiday, so I took the Bini instead which then broke down on the way home. Resolved a few of those issues in November in the form of taking on a couple of very good staff, and also a "sod it" moment in which I blew a wedge of house money on a Range Rover and a restored Impreza because I was sick of driving chod while also lending three good cars to other people... So this year starts off with me working very hard to resolve the other points, also having just bought out another business competitor I have a 90% market stake (educated guess) in my specific target market, so will be pushing hard into that. It's a HUGE relief to not have to worry about what to drive everyday and not putting any targets on myself to finish (or start!) any projects - they'll get done when they get done and the sooner I have a house with lots of shed/garage space the sooner I can concentrate on doing some of that too. Best wishes for this years goals for everyone reading and/or posting and maybe there will be a happy review in 12 months time

Changes are afoot at Chez Catherder, and it has nothing to do with cars… Our landlord announced they want to sell the house early this year, so we’ll be moving real soon. We don’t want to buy it from them because it’s not where we want to be long term, and it has… issues. Like we’re never sure that flushing the loo will not come back up through the basement drain, and it needs a ton of deferred maintenance. So this weekend I’m getting on a plane and heading to the east coast of Florida for a few days to scope out places.

The Princess and I are getting along better now. My demands are pretty meagre at the moment, I'm not doing many miles at all and it's all local but since getting some fresh fuel in it and replacing the ruptured fuel line its certainly running a lot nicer than it was. It's a lot less stressful to pilot around town than the Maestro was because people seem to actually see it and give me a bit more space and it's a lot more comfortable so I'm actually enjoying old car ownership rather more than one might expect at this time of year. The weather is still stopping me from doing any improvements but at least for now the Princess is doing a sterling job of just being A Car, which is exactly what I need.
If I'm really lucky I'll get a run of good weather and free time before the house move so I can at least give the car a proper spring clean. Right now I'd be lucky if it stayed dry long enough for me to turn the hose on, let alone fill a bucket.
