Yup, its another "tell me about" thread, I know you've missed them... I've been offered the chance to buy a MK1 Golf Cab cheaply and was wondering what the verdict was on them? Now i'm not really a fan of all that wind in me hair nonsense, but like I said, its cheap and its got a really good body. Yup, its painted badly in a off gold colour, sits on 17's and doesn't start, but i'm kinda feelin' the love for it. So, show me pics and give me advice... **Try and steer away from the Chav look please**I'll start off with a quick Google image search

i don't want to answer your thread, but nobody else has... so, they're pretty reliable, easily tuned to an extent, easy enough to maintain, hoods are a hard part to replace i think, but usually solid otherwise, not much in the way of rust traps just your usual spots like turrets sils and the lip of the bonnet and boot i think. 8v engine is tappety but so are all the best ones eh? IMO not got the performance or economy or looks to stand out in any way but i aint no VW fan, is I? although i think it does have some torque but it aint gonna make up for the hairdresser image is it?

I think its one of those cars that, no matter what you do to it, will always require the driver to have a vagina to drive it... if you get the gist.

What engine does the one you're thinking about have? IIRC these suffer from the bulkhead breaking at the point where the clutch cable enters the engine bay.....it happened to a 1979 1.5 Hatch I worked on many moons ago anyway!

clipper or gti or...? clipper is a great little motor, pretty good on performance and is a mile cheaper to insure than a gti. they don't suffer from scuttle shake too bad at all, due to the bracing bar. nice things to drive really. pierberg carbs are t0ss. rear screens are glass, rather than the usual rubbish plastic so many company's fit in convertible hoods. thats about my sum knowledge, sorry.

Its a plain old 1600cc, not a clipper, which is good, never been a fan of those huge bumper affairs bolted to them!
Yup, the carbs are wibblepoo, thats the reason it wont start, things shot it
I figure if you never put the roof down it'll be alright???

I like 'em either in gold/brown, bog stock standard with faded bumpers OR in white with the clipper kit - possibly the only car ever to look good in such a hue.
They do cut through the bulkhead with the clutch cable too, repair panels are available.

Well it looks solid enough, and a new hood is a big expense that you'll avoid. I'd go for it, all the mechanicals will be shared with other Golfs so parts will be dead easy to get hold of. The wheels aren't actually that bad either!
EDIT: Also Wolfsburg is the VW factory in Germany i think.

Looks ok, and I'm not really a fan of cabs. Not into verts really. HOWEVER, paint those rims black to match the hood and it'll look pretty tough. Don't ever put the top down though, unless your other half is driving.
